Like the lad’s work. Doesn’t always appear to help himself, though…

Quoted Text
RL: I’m a lifelong Grimsby Town supporter, and as with a large majority of kids that I grew up with in the 80s and 90s, I also follow Manchester United.

He added a flag, which is pretty poorly presented, ask a group of Primary kids and they could have probably come up with something more interesting.

I haven’t seen this much of a come-and-get-me-plea to any Glazers since Geoff Broome attended the Solaglas Christmas do dressed as Jimmy Savile.

Any self-respecting 80s/90s kid in Grimsby spent their childhood trying not to be followed by him. Fück United.

He went to school with my son, and he still goes to quite a few town games. So he’s done good as far as I’m concerned.

Out of my 4 best mates who go to Town games, I know for a fact that two of them follow Man Utd more avidly and have supported both clubs since childhood. It’s deplorable, but I think I’m in the minority when it comes to being a one-club town fan. Unfortunately.

My nephews always ask me who I support.

I say Grimsby.

They look at me a bit funny and say "yeah but who do you actually support?", or sometimes even "what proper team?" lol.....

Very confusing for them.

I know around 5 or 6 that go regularly to both Forest and Notts games but they are all over 50,I don’t know anyone else who supports another team outside of the city as well as Notts but I suppose that anyone born in the Sky area will more likely to  support a Premier League club rather than Grimsby or Notts solely due to exposure, glamour and high profile players

I’ve never got the Grimsby + Premier League side thing.

Perhaps it’s because I, like most on here, remember when we used to play most of them.

My brother supports both Haverfordwest and Arsenal, but tbf he was born in H-west and one of our uncles was a Londoner who lived literally next door to Highbury and hooked him in the early-mid 90's like some kind of premier league dealer - one free hit then you're hooked for life.  Luckily our grandad wouldn't allow this travesty to happen with me as well and dragged me to BP as often as possible, turning me into a town fan for life.  The bloody sadist.

For me its Town 1st, Liverpool not even close 2nd.

This is purely based on watching Liverpool as kid growing up with my Dad having it on tv.  He did take me to my first Town game in the early 80s, and Liverpool has only ever been when on tv, an armchair supporter if you like.

When I was a kid, I always had a soft spot for Forest, because I liked Des Walker (fantastic defender in his prime) and Clough's antics were always entertaining. Also had a (smaller) soft spot for Arsenal as well back then - no idea why, as I didn't have any obvious reason. Maybe I liked the shirts, or something?

The only club I've paid money to watch (in this country) is GTFC.

Actually, I tell a lie. I was once in Nottingham for a boozy weekend with some mates and, while the others were sleeping off a late night, I went to watch a friendly between Notts County and Arsenal. Must have been 20-odd years ago or more!

I understand that much more than following a big team. It's a family atmosphere at that level, you're part of something and your small contribution actually has an impact.

I was also at that game and it was part of a deal when we sold local lad Jermaine Pennant to Arsenal,it sticks in my mind because Arsenal put out virtually a full squad for the game,Pennant got a little notoriety later when he played a game with a tag on after drink drinking (I think)

Just checked, and that was back in 1999 so I was mid-20s back then! Half a lifetime away. One of my mates lived in Fox Road by the cricket ground at the time so it wasn't far to walk to see the game. All I remember is that it was a warm day.

Pennant had all sorts of issues - developed a drink problem, I believe, and had a dodgy upbringing on the Meadows. Reportedly left a sports car somewhere in Zaragoza because he couldn't remember where he parked it one night.

Plus the affordable and friendly 'Eva's Grill' across from TBI for a pre match meal. Mainly Greek menu.

We didn't go too fancy food wise back then. The local was the Larwood and we tended to get some scran there (gammon always my go to) and have a few games of pool before heading into Nottingham for the night. Same place next morning for a gut buster breakfast to soak up the booze!
