Can't stand the Tories, never have and never will. But to suggest the custodian of the area's most beloved institution shouldn't be courteous to the town's incumbent MP, is pretty petty stuff. He has to work with what is there. You only have to read a paragraph of his Guardian column to know which side of the political divide he sits on

Sickening

What is "sickening" about the local MP teasing the PM about the Mighty Mariners beating his team? Good publicity for the club and the town.

If it is because she is not a dyed in the wool Town fan who went to Braintree to see us lose 5-0 then that is just daft.

The PM no less wished us well and hope we continue to cause a shock and whatever your politics that has to be a good thing.

In two minds...but overall.....it stopped the P.M lying and avoiding any real questions for a minute which p!sses me off even more than this cringe from our hopefully soon to be ex M.P

Oh and post edit...talking of bandwagons....still waiting to see Vickers zip lining down the death slide at the long ago promised Youth Hub that was supposed to be being built at Garth Lane as part of the multi million town deal.

It would be nice to see the local MP actually representing the Town and using her position as an MP to raise and improve issues.

Since 2019 she's submitted 3 written questions and made 77 spoken contributions in parliament, most of which are nodding in agreement at something someone else has said.

For a bit of comparison the last Labour MP submitted 330 written questions and made 359 spoken contributions in that time.

For a bit of balance Martin Vickers who's politics I completely disagree with has made over 900 spoken contributions and submitted over 100 written questions since 2010.

I'm not sure Nici is really doing a lot for anyone. Happy to be corrected if she's a stunning constituency MP

Any publicity we get should be good publicity, Wrexham have really milked it through their American owners and seems to have worked for them, so the PM wishing us luck for the Brighton game can only be good for us even if it wants to make you throw up!!

Dead Eye Dobbin stood motionless waiting, waiting, waiting for the ball to arrive. Back came the right foot, Down came the right foot, Bang ! Headlines around the world as the ball flew into the very top right hand corner of the goal.( Jim Dobbin scoring in the 89th minute for Town against Newcastle United away 24/10/1992 )

Don't like the woman that much, she's just a typical politician but all the faux outrage on here is laughable.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I was there, the day Bradley Wood scored a 35 yarder!

From the black and white striped shirts
To the fish in the sea
You'll hear us singing
Coz we are Grimsby.

You won't hear us crying
But you'll hear us shout
Coz we are the Grimsby
And this is our chant.......... Grimsby! Grimsby! Grimsby!

Which stand does she have a season ticket in? Was she at the game? Was she in the queue for a Brighton ticket or even one of the 4,851 fans who went to the Newport game? I doubt if she will at the Rochdale as well, as the Topic says 'band Wagon Jumper'. It appears to me that she used Town's victory to promote herself to the TV audience of parliament.

Nici is the archetypal modern day MP. Cares nothing for the constituents or the community they’re elected to serve, but works tirelessly to promote themselves.

Nici is stealing a living, plain and simple. I know a couple of hard tory voters who can’t stand her and have said they’d consider voting for a labour candidate in the next election…these are people who’d vote Tory if a pig wore a blue rosette.

Sadly, I suspect this happens at other clubs, especially the small ones like us who suddenly get a bit of publicity or success. It’s sickening really, political allegiance is irrelevant, I’d not be happy if we had a labour MP doing the same.

You got more sincerity from Pol Pot than you get from the likes of Nici…

I don’t think a politician or in our case, now a PM (a lying shite one at that) ‘promoting them’ is particularly good for any football club…

What a nasty little post. Please everyone lighten up. There isn’t a single MP of whatever party who wouldn’t have done the same. It’s a little bit of fun, particularly as the PM is a Southampton supporter, and it’s given us a bit of positive exposure and publicity. Why the hatred and anger that is on this forum over something so trivial completely baffles me. It was a bit of fun. End of. #UTM.

Nici does absolutely nothing for this area, we all know that and the sight of her brings up a little bit of sick in my mouth.

That clip is equally nauseating, all round. Nici waving a faux flag, Vickers nodding away like the Churchill dog and the fake guffaws from Sunak and his cronies on the front bench.

But, sadly, that's politics and especially PMQ's which is dominated by stupid statements like those and "Will the PM join me in congratulating the local scout group who raised 4p over the weekend with a jumble sale.". It's an opportunity for two-bit MP's to get themselves in their local rag and look like they're doing something.

I don't feel particularly comfortable with the recent Tory delegation to BP and photograph opps with 1878, which serves the politicians better than the club I think.

But I get it. Stockwood and co. are just playing the game. I hope to god we're not lumbered with this shower for too much longer, but you never know. Once you've cut your nose off it rarely grows back.

PMQ's is a media event and a bit of a circus to be honest, yes it raises questions but I'm not sure it drives any real policy change, I despise the Tories and Lia Nici is archetypal of many MP's across all parties in fairness who want a political career rather than doing the job for the betterment of constituents and overall society.

Do I like that she referenced GTFC in that session? No. Do I like that the PM who no doubt we'd have to explain to him a football is round came in on "the joke"? No, in fact I like it even less as he referenced supporting us to win the cup and he hasn't got the golden touch at the moment as he?

You have to take things in context and this is pretty insignificant. There are other media opportunities that we should worry more about like when the PM asked a homeless man what his "plans for the weekend" where prior to Christmas when he was serving him breakfast in a refuge.

Quite simply these people are divorced from reality!!

I can’t stand Nici and I’ve only every voted Labour, but reactions like this are a part of the reason Labour are struggling to get in IMO.

If somebody chooses to vote, or stand as a Tory, then that is their right in a democracy. Throwing your toys out the pram every time they speak because they have different views to you makes you just as bad as they are IMO.

She’s mentioned our name in parliament because we beat the PMs premier league team to make the FA Cup quarter bloody finals, Stockwood mentioned it because his team have been mentioned in parliament for such an historic achievement. It’s really not that deep.

Some of you lot need to lighten up a bit.

I’m no Tory myself, but if you can tell me what the Labour Party did for the area for the decades they were in, I’m all ears. Get ready for a Life of Brian moment……

Then your ears will be in for a long wait 🙃

In what sense are Labour “struggling to get in”?
We haven’t had a GE for 4 years, in recent local elections they’ve trounced these depraved Tories and they’re streets ahead in the polls. They will have a huge majority at the next general election.

FWIW….I saw Nici in PMQ’s. Happy to get a mention/exposure, even though it’s from an incompetent sycophant supposedly representing the Town. PMQ’s generally are a sickening indicator of how dreadful our current parliamentary system is, but hey….UTM.

The problem with PMQs is the lack of PMAs. It's an utterly worthless circus which the media laps up rather than actually doing some proper journalism. I don't really care which party leader's pre-prepared scripted line went down best in the chamber. I'm more interested in what they do (or generally don't do).

PMQs is about as worthwhile as Question Time.

Nici represents everything bad about modern day politics. She's in it for herself and doesn't give a monkeys about her constituency - everyone knows it.

Vickers obviously has more interest in looking after the constituents of his home town, but, on a national level, is too spineless to have an opinion of his own and will vote for any ghastly policy he's told to by his bosses. At least, I assume this is the case. I can't imagine an otherwise reasonable person for so many obviously appalling bills off their own bat.

Certainly not a Tory (Labour member) and absolutely detest their politics and all they stand for.

However for some to be outraged at a simple retweet and comment or the recent engagement from Jason and the club (regulator launch) is utterly bizarre. Anyone running our football club needs to proactively engage and work professionally with all local leaders; MP's, councillors, head teachers, Police etc etc. To not do so would just be bat sh*t crazy to be honest with you.

We will need community support for a whole rage of things; safeguarding, policing, fan safety, new ground, new training ground, planning permissions, public investment the list goes on.

She's crap, her party is crap, but we got a mention on TV in Parliament for a good reason, which is a good thing despite peoples thoughts on her, her abilities and the Conservatives more generally. She was elected to the position. Some of us need to be a little less partisan on absolutely everything, all the time.

(Don't know if I forgot to mention, she really is crap btw!!)

Stockwood is obviously left-wing, but knows how to play the game. Say nice things about those with power/influence and the potential to help out your business(es), and you'll generally not go too far wrong.

Jason Stockwood said on Twitter he would take a break from social media after getting "pelters" for daring to say thank you to the elected member of Parliament for Great Grimsby for highlighting the clubs success at PMQ's.

We all know Stockwood is not a Tory but he seems blessed with common courtesy, which seems beyond some of the Twitter mob, and sadly some on here.

All politicians of all parties, good ones, bad ones and indifferent ones will comment or get a photo opportunity when their local team hits the headlines. It would be ridiculous if they didn't.

I gave up on politics about 5 years ago and feel calmer for it. They're all the same, pigs in the trough with little interest in their local communities.
My tory MP represented a constituency that voted massively remain, then spent three years running round Westminster leading the brexit lot. Nici is anonymous and everyone knows she'll be unemployed shortly after 22:00 on the day of the next election. She only got in because nobody wanted Jeremy Corbyn for goodness sake.
Have a day off boys and girls, celebrate the fact that we're in the FA Cup quarter final and finally our team is in the national spotlight. Every TV company in the land will be circling Blundell Park next week looking to fill 5 minutes, having not been near for 20 years. What should we do, chuck 'em out because they're hypocrites?
Jason may be looking for support for GTFC in other ways at some point. If you really think he should tell the local MP to clear off you're really naive. I believe its called "influencing skills", although some of us may know it by another term.
Stop watching the news, stop watching PMQ's and relax!!

How right, have a day off indeed. I rarely watch TV News channels. Can't stand the rudeness and self promotion of so called 'journalists' with obvious agendas and career plans. TV generally is a cess pit in a race to the bottom as it competes with baleful social media and addiction to binary formats.

Supporting your local team and associated forums should be a safe haven from worldly concerns and politics.

Two points: -
1/ Why drag politics into football , especially nationwide politics?
2/ Why call somebody a ' buffoon' , just because they have a different political view to yours?
Just as a point of interest, you couldn't have got a more self serving , egotistical politician as the last Labour leader who was voted in to run the country. Made his name in politics, jumped ship and has since acquired a very large property portfolio and thinks he has the answers to all the world's problems.

This is not the first time you’ve said this and I’m starting to become concerned that you actually believe it. As if the last two election results have come about from people not being asked politely enough, rather than a concerted effort by the powers of capital to put down the prospect of greater wealth distribution.

The thing that concerns me most, is the sort of stuff that gets airtime at PMQ's, while people are sat in their homes in overcoats, wondering if they should have 30p beans or tomatoes for tea. If she wants to rib Sunak about his pretend support of Southampton, do it in the subsidised bar in the House of Commons.

All this backslapping jocularity sickens me when there are really important concerns that need addressing.

And that should be the concern of every voter , whichever way you lean.

Yeah the old angry activist types get a bit boring after a while , let’s be honest if you want to talk about last useless MPs then we had Austin Mitchill for nearly 40 years tossing it off around the House of Commons.
He was taking photos of birds during the period of this Towns total economic collapse yet he was first to turn up for the freebie Wembley trips despite being a Yorkie and never having supported the club .

MPs love a photo op and in a few years time when we might need their help for a new ground or a Blundell Park renovation our clubs owners will be able to remind the MPs and the Prime Minister about the times they draped themselves in a Town scarf

Probably because he’s so shallow and vacuous, most of us don’t believe him when he says stuff like that.

Similar to when he boasts he’s a Northern MP and the only reason he spends time up there is to take his daughter shooting.

I'd imagine that Sunak is as big a footy supporter as one of his erstwhile predecessors, Cameron, who was an avid West Ham fan. Erm, in mean Aston Villa. Sunak probably thinks Southampton's nickname is The Bees...

I hate some of the cocky fornicators that have got tickets for Brighton and went to Southampton and have only started watching town full time this season. Dancing round the pontoon like children every game . They have long supported premier league teams and never given a toss about Town till last season. Some poor sod who has been a season ticket holder for 30 years will of missed out though . That boils my urine . By the way Im not or had no intention of going to the game . I'll watch on TV

If preachy Nici had to ask a question in the Commons and jump on the bandwagon…

I’d have more respect if she asked the Defence Secretary about our problems at corners…

Are you just assuming that or have you done some research?

Why is it pretend support he is from Southampton . Why wouldn’t he  support his home Town team?

Probably because he’s so shallow and vacuous, most of us don’t believe him when he says stuff like that.

Similar to when he boasts he’s a Northern MP and the only reason he spends time up there is to take his daughter shooting.

This is not the first time you’ve said this and I’m starting to become concerned that you actually believe it. As if the last two election results have come about from people not being asked politely enough, rather than a concerted effort by the powers of capital to put down the prospect of greater wealth distribution.

This whole thread is about Politics into football, i didnt start it....

ah yes the last labour leader, 13 years ago, but of course, still all there fault

It's been the Socialist fault for over a hundred years. You ever wondered why well-educated East Europeans came over to the UK to pick spuds. Its because they had to endure since WW2 the very Socialist system you seem to promote. All of Eastern Europe dumped Socialism as soon as they could. I wonder if they knew something you can't comprehend?

Exactly this. Her constituency has many, many challenges and, given that she was given a question, she should have used it in a constructive manner.

Well toe curling as it was if she had asked a question about the minutiae of life in Grimsby you and the rest of the country wouldn’t know she had asked it  .Alternatively this question has the Town appearing across all media keeping the three weeks of everyone in the country hearing about this place called Grimsby going . Many of those will be hearing the name for the first time  because there hasn’t been much reason to hear about it in the last 30 years. Politics is irrelevant  here.

I don't suppose you knew that national debt was falling under the last Labour government and that the 2008 global crash wasn't caused by having decent public libraries and Surestart centres? Depressing that anyone who thinks like you has any connection to Grimsby

Can't this be moved to non football?

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

I don't see the connection. A lot of politically illiterate people were hoodwinked into thinking that Brexit was in their best interests. In blind surveys, Labour's proposed policies were seen much more favourably than the Tory's. But it wasn't an election about domestic policies, It was a Brexit general election, plain and simple. Anyone with any political nous knows that. So you either don't have any (political nous) or are being deliberately obtuse

"Labour's proposed policies were seen much more favourably than the Tory's." Your having a laugh. Where any of Leftie's thinking ever worked? Eastern Europe? N. Korea? China? Ah well China is doing better when they adopted Capitalism, whilst they were Totalitarian and Socialist 50 million died of hunger. Now that they are Totalitarian and Capitalist they can feed themselves.
Or shall we try your Lefty Socialist policies in Venezuela? Oh they a 1000% inflation and the population has lost 20% of their body weight due to malnutrition following the same policies Labour are proposing.
So where has your super duper policy worked?

No magic money tree…but managed to find £37bn for a track and trace system that never did work…hundreds of millions for dodgy PPE contracts for chums…just saying…

And being politically illiterate does not indicate that one may be thick…

Either way, Nici has been much more effective gobbling Johnson’s Johnson juice than she has at being an MP…

You're, if we are talking semantics.

When you say "you just think you know better", are you aiming that at me, the original poster, or just Labour voters in general?

If it's me, then I don't think I know better than those I disagree with. I think I am right and they are wrong obviously, otherwise I would have the same views as they do. Just as they think they are right and I am wrong.

I always find it odd that when you challenge the views of others, they generally get shirty.

And for the record, research suggests that Socialists are generally more intelligent than right wingers. Don't shoot the messenger.

You don’t have to be a right winger not be a socialist . The Labour Party has only presented one socialist agenda in a general election since 1993 and got wiped out when it did.

Then it's back to political illiteracy and a good proportion of the voters not understanding what socialism is, and having a jaundiced view of it because the establishment tells them it is to be feared.

The country is in a right old state and yet people fear the alternative. Baffles me.

I tried to be delicate. Put it this way, as much as the place means to me, I wouldn't be particularly confident of Grimsby appearing high in a league table of average intelligence. That goes for all the other places that were persuaded to vote overwhelmingly for Brexit too. Brexit was principally a protest vote against the squeexing of living standards brought about by the economically ruinous Tory austerity politics. Poor feckers protested at the wrong polling booth, keeping the Tories in power for another 7 years

And yet, during covid, if we ignore the billions syphoned off into the pockets of Tory cronies, the vast majority of systems in place to support you and I were pretty socialist, and even mirrored some of the Corbyn’s manifesto.

Always hilarious though when people make assumptions about the labour party, or any other party for that matter not being able to run a country when, in the last 100 or so years, they’ve ruled for no more than about 34% of the time. All it proves is masses of the voting public are politically unaware, politically illiterate and many believe anything tory spin doctors publish…

I guess another discussion here is, all those that bang on about keeping politics out of football (impossible but they still bang on), most will likely be non labour voters, how do they feel about this? How do they feel about a government white paper appearing to imply some controls over the game, which could potentially improve the governance of the sport? How do they feel about all this?

It’s alarming that people can’t see that yet again, Nici is a only there because Johnson’s Johnson needs a rest and it’s a photo opportunity and Sunak knows it’ll create a small bit of distraction from the fact his government are pushing though illegal policies…

I’ve said time and time again, there’s are merely photo opportunities and nothing more. They care nothing about th game or the club. I’d be annoyed if it was a labour MP, Green, Lib Dem or whatever…

Plainly put, the Tories have lost the economic argument for Brexit and their policies are now based on appeasing the electorate who think we can manage without migrant labour. Problem is most of them have either retired from work or have never worked.

So you are now saying people in Grimsby are of below average intelligence. I thought that was National Socialism.

You don’t have to be a right winger not be a socialist . The Labour Party has only presented one socialist agenda in a general election since 1993 and got wiped out when it did.

This is a prime example of the problems we currently face. Corbyn's 2019 manifesto wasn't anything like a socialist agenda! It was simply moderate social democracy as you would find in the majority of our European neighbours. As I pointed out many a time back in 2019, most of the policies on offer wouldn't have been out of place in a Conservative Party manifesto from the early 70s, yet it was painted as socialism! It's an absolute nonsense.

The Overton window has been dragged so far to the right over the past 40 years that people have really become confused about what is extreme and what isn't. Decades of propaganda/outright bullshit from the right-wing dominated media (parroted by the BBC) and the way in which people move seamlessly in and out of government from the Tufton Street 'think tanks' (who don't reveal who funds them) means that we're now left with a government way to the right of anything that Thatcher imagined. And she was terrible enough. They are also way to the right of the majority of voters' political leanings which is why the Tories have degenerated into a Party with no ideas other than stoking a culture war and attempting to create a fake 'Us versus Them' narrative in a grubby attempt to hold onto power.

Unfortunately, the media and think tanks have done too good a job of shaping a false narrative, so we've ended up with a thoroughly unimpressive clique in charge of the Labour Party whose policies would still leave us well to the right of where Thatcher began. The only hope is that Starmer is lying about what he plans to do when he gets into power (as the Tories have done since time immemorial). All we need is moderate social democracy. And politicians with enough courage to stand up to the media barons and implement it.

How ironic that we have 2 sides of the political spectrum questioning each other’s intelligence, yet in the main they will still choose to vote for the same party’s of failure…. Insanity!

If you read carefully I think you will see that there is only one side of the arguement questioning the other sides intelligence here.

RE: voting the same way -Watch the film-doc Tory Boy to see this in action.  It's an eye opener how many people just accept the local MP is crap at his job, doesn't care about his constituents, doesn't even live in the area (3 weeks in london per month, 1 week in paris, only visits his seat on election night), employs his wife and son at an office that doesn't exist, hasn't even done a surgery in 15 years and yet when it comes to election time they all vote him back in instead of an alternative for a 7th term because that's what they've always done and he wears the right colour tie.

Rather then a lack of intelligence or some dark conspiracy theory isn’t a simpler explaination that if people don’t vote for change it’s because they are happy with what they have got which appears to deeply annoy those who wish to think on their behalf that they know better.

Watch it and find out for yourself I guess, it's difficult to encapsulate 90-odd minutes of documentary into a short paragraph on here but the thrust of what I was getting at was that people seem to be happy with failure as long as the correct colour tie is being worn rather than try a different candidate who might be a success, that in the main they'll happily complain about the poor service but still keep said person in the role because 'that's how I vote'.  I guess I'm saying identity/tribalism appears to be more important than facts or experience - no conspiracy theories to see here

That's fair enough and I'm glad you are happy with your lot, but it's about everyone for me.

I'm comfortable financially, but there are too many people struggling to get by, and it's them that I think of.

Fair point regarding this thread, but generally speaking opposition voters will always question, Again just taking Austin Mitchell for example, he basically stole a living for decades but people continued to vote him in.

Another reason would be that people, especially the older generations are simply scared of change, indoctrination or even good old propaganda. With the advances of social media the new generations will be free (hopefully) to form their own opinions, and hopefully get a real change for the better, rather than the same old pigs in the trough as buckstown so rightly commented.

Ah! The old chestnut that only Tories know how to handle the economy. They certainly know how to direct it toward them and theirs.

Doing really well with it at the moment I see.

You are fed, housed, heating (expensive on) Try Venezuela, they are the "richest" country (potentially) with the highest oil reserves in the world. But due to Socialism cannot feed themselves, and have to buy in (yes buy) oil to refine how stupid is that? Socialism=Misery
You point out a Socialist state that is doing fine. Go on then start Googling.
Your reply above is the same old stuff. BUT NO ACTUAL PROOF OF SOCIALISM WORKING ANYWHERE.  JUST WHINGES

My post that you quoted does not contain the term socialism.

I want a more centrist socially democratic government, but like many other right wingers, you automatically jump on the red menace bullsh1t that has been drip fed into you all your adult life.

Fooking Venezuela. I have a mate who comes up with the same crap. Was there an article about it in the Daily Mail, or on GB News?

If socialism is such a failure on its own terms, why do countries like USA and GB feel the need to interfere with the internal politics of every single country even contemplating anything slightly to the left of unfettered free-market capitalism?

You sound very cross. You’ve entirely missed the point. We’re describing the reality of how we’re governed in Britain, not ‘socialism’.

If socialism doesn’t work, why are the power mad, obscenely rich and the greedy so scared of it…it’s flipping gross that people are so so scared of something that helps the many…
