Got a Skoda Karoq
5 years old in October, currently on 40k miles.

It's on 4 year pcp, 1 year into it.

Skoda just called to say in October, it will need to Cambelt and water pump, for £750

I'm never going to own the car as its PCP, so can i try hold off, of do i need to get it done?

Cambelt goes and it's a write off.

Should it need a new cam belt after 40k?

I thought it was more like double that mileage or have I just been lucky? 😏

They told me it's due to the age....

VW group cam belts need to be replaced after a set amount of time or mileage. 4 or 5 years, I think it is. I've got an Octavia now, but previously owned an Audi and remember cursing about having to get it replaced despite the low mileage!

Something for me to consider is my car is almost 3.5 years old so no doubt they'll be recommending a replacement of my cam belt before too long. Yeesh.

Didn't realise it was down to the age of the cam belt tbh?

So if you do a low 5-6k miles per year, you could need it replacing after 25-30k?

They can't be very robust if that's the case? Or is it just another ruse to get more money out of their valued customers?

I've done PCP. On an HP agreement, you can hand the car back after you have paid 50% of the agreement i.e. halfway through the term, of course, there's nothing back in terms of cash. I seem to recall that a PCP works the same way.

So check out what it says on google

and more importantly

READ THE SMALL PRINT YOUR CONTRACT.

If you have lost it then just ring up who you pay the instalments to and ask about returning the vehicle

Hope this helps.

A long time since I had it but my A3 I think was 70k or five years. Just get it done cause cambelt going is a potential disaster.

Seperately - cars are expensive to run but I’ve never got my head around why people pay money out each month for cars they’ll never own outright. You can get a good finance rate from most banks for a loan to buy and pay it off in a similar amount of time and you then have a deposit in the form or trade in or sale for the old one.

I got a good deal on my car through carwow - about 25% off list, I think, though that was because it was the year before the new model was due to be released. Had to sign up to a PCP to get the deal, but immediately paid it off using a loan. The best of both worlds!

That was back when interest rates were a bit lower, of course. Bank loans not as appealing right now.
