So I have a massive fear of flying to the point that the idea of it brings me out in a cold sweat.

I have in the past when I was younger under severe duress but the last time was probably 15 years ago.
As anyone reading the mental health thread will know I suffer from generalised anxiety disorder and OCD which is not a good start.

For anyone thinking ‘just grow a pair’ or ‘get on with it’ then its something I’ve beat myself with, many times.

I’m also not stupid so I know all about statistics and safety in comparison to other modes of transportation blah blah.

Hagrids NYC thread got me thinking. My better half wants to go for her 40th and until this week I’d resigned myself to be absent from it (she may prefer that!), however I feel I owe her to at least entertain the possibility.

So the questions I have are -

Has anyone taken prescription drugs to get through it? (Voluntarily or in a BA Baracus type scenario)

Has anyone had Hypnotherapy for it?

Any other treatments or methods?

Thanks in advance

You're not on your own.

I've looked into it and there are nervous flyer courses you can go on, which might be something you can have a look at.

Get yourself down to humberside airport and go on a little 2 man bone shaker for a fly around the town, after you get through that a real plane will be a piece of urine.

My uncle is terrified of it but does at least one world tour a year with his work. Pretty sure his trick is night nurse or similar before a long flight.

Got to admit I’m not a big fan of it despite serving in the RAF and flying on Hercs and helicopters and spending the majority of my adult life maintaining aircraft.

A couple of beers in the departure lounge always helps me.

It's the takeoff that I fear most, little altitude to play with if anything goes wrong.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

My birthday is September 11th and I became a bit fixated around the events of 2001 afterwards. I still am I guess as I’ve watched and read so much around it. My fear definitely increased after that fateful day.

I find it all very embarrassing truth be told but, the idea of getting on a plane seems literally impossible let alone on one all the way to the states.

I mean you can get on a boat there but it’s one way! What’s the good of that? 😂

Hi mate. PM me or give me a ring and we could talk it through. It’s really common and entirely rational but you CAN manage it. Got some ideas. Would like to help.

My other half uses Diazepam. Works a treat for her.

Yes I have friends who use diazepam or propranolol or amatriptaline to good effect. However, doctors are very reluctant to prescribe ‘dazzies’.
