Someone who is gay has to 'come out' several times in their lives — to their close family, then their friends, then work colleagues, etc (if and when they feel comfortable).

When you think about it, it's mad that anyone has to declare their sexual orientation. This idea that you're heterosexual by default needs to change. It suggests that being gay is somehow unconventional.

Everyone is an individual, everyone is different, everyone should be able to be who they are without having to justify it to anyone. As long as they're not harming anyone else.

Massive respect to Jake Daniels. I imagine it takes an immense amount of courage to do what he's done.

He's only 17 for goodness sake. He will not have fully matured yet into an adult. Too early to make life changing choices.

Not sure if you're on the wind-up or not, but most people are aware of their sexuality many many years before 17, and sadly some people aren't able to be themselves because of societies' lack of acceptance driven by prejudice.

Not sure what Jake Daniels is too young to do? Be himself? Be proud of himself? Not hide himself to the world? Noone at any age should have to do that and noone should have to be the first male gay pro footy player to be themselves publically, and have themselves as the big story and catalyst, but I am so so grateful to Jake Daniels for doing so and I hope it will be a real catalyst for change so future players, fans, staff etc surrounding the game don't have to weigh up reactions of others before they feel able to simply be who they are.
