Now the grand kids have turned into a tribe and they need tiring out does anyone know if you can still hire chalets at the Fitties, great holiday when I was a kid.

Pretty sure you can. I’ve seen chalets on Airbnb, can’t remember if they were on the Fitties though.

We go through the fitties regularly and there's plenty for hire.

This might help:

Selling prices have rocketed recently, some are up for sale for as much as £180,000 for what is let's face it a glorified shack.

When you think what you can get a proper house for in Cleethorpes it’s bonkers isn’t it? Not quite Mudeford Spit levels where beach huts set you back £300k. Nice, big beach huts, in a lovely location, but still beach huts.

You can also try Thorpe Park next door to the fitties, it's a modern day caravan park.

Hi Herts

A company who managed/owned a place I booked in Cleethorpes via AirBNB also do bookings direct. Dunno if they have chalets. Think it might be cheaper than Airbnb price if they do:

I know someone who bought a chalet on the fitties for £7000 a few years back. I told him he wanted certifying.

He's just sold it in a week for 10 times that amount and it's not even that nice. They will probably knock it down and build a new one on the site, as is happening more frequently since Tingdene bought it from the council.

Lots of solid wooden chalets and even brick-built properties have been arising there in recent years. A bit different to the shacks of old which looked like they might struggle to stand in a strong wind!

Bit of a gamble spending too much money on one given the way the climate is going. That storm surge the other year washed away a good  chunk of the dunes protecting the Fitties so they might only have another decade or two if sea levels rise as anticipated...

I thought there were rules about what style and materials could be used. Article in some artsie magazine linked to by the Grauniad a few years back about it.

Might have been this:

There are rules yes, but there are a lot of new ones springing up and they are generally very nicely done, mostly timber construction. There are also a lot being renovated with new cladding and roofing.

The rules are more of a guideline than anything. There are a few brick built ones that look just like run of the mill bungalows and I wonder how they got permission, seeing as the council generally prefer a more shack like appearance. They may have sneaked through before the guidelines came in as all the new ones are done with cladding of one sort or another.

It's nuts isn't it when you consider you have to find somewhere else to live 2 months of the year, the fact it's leasehold and then the land it sits on being particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Meanwhile here I am in a house on the edge of town that I can live in 365 days a year, has a gas and electricity supply and is a lot less vulnerable but it's half the price some of them chalets go for!

If you think the prices in the Fitties are mad, here’s an update  on the Mudeford Spit* beach huts. £500k not £300k as I previously thought:

https://www.mylondon.news/lifestyle/travel/beautiful-seaside-town-loved-londoners-23515495.amp

Put that in perspective, the most expensive house in Cleethorpes on Rightmove is £650,000 (4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, detached).

* lovely bit of real estate but ….

I was up there yesterday and noticed some work going on at a chalet just before the beach car park. I don’t know if they’ve knocked the old chalet down and started again but it looks amazing, more akin to a Scandinavian log cabin, looks out of place but in time I think we will see more of these and I reckon that already this one will be worth over 200k.

I suppose there will be an argument builds like this will ruin the character of the place, and I can see that already with this one. The likes of Airbnb will only drive up these kind of investments and down the line most people will be priced out of a little retirement home. But that’s progress for you.

That’s the way I see it going Humbo. For years people like teachers have only been able to afford to rent in places like Cornwall. Now even that is getting hard because houses that were available for short hold tenancies are becoming holiday lets.

Stayed at a 2 bedroom terraced house in Cleethorpes in October. £100 a night with fees. What do they normally rent for? £500/£600 a month?

That's about the monthly rental price for a bog standard terrace house in Cleethorpes.
