It should not be that difficult to produce pitches which offer said balance and a contest between bat and ball. I’d wager if stiff and financial penalties were a threat that pitches would be more like they need to be. Thought they'd go for too many runs/too few overs, and they arguably did, but it may yet not matter. Our attack is weak, but Holder-Da Silva-Joseph at 6-7-8 isn't pretty. He’s stayed on purely through lack of an alternative hasn’t he but that’s far from ideal. We absolutely need Root the batsman but his ‘captaincy’ is definitely something we don’t.
