The wife has just informed me that Tommy Widdrington is the father of one of the dancer's on Strictly (Kai, if that means anything to anyone).

My three main memories of Widdrington are: 1.Him signing for a hefty fee; 2. Him getting taken out and injured big time at Sunderland away (was it Kevin Muscat?) and 3. Someone in the Lower Findus shouting at him when he was subbed by Buckley mark II, at the start of the 97/98 season "Don't worry Tommy lad...you'll be here long after Buckley's gone!" Or words to that effect. How wrong that fan was!

Yes Tommy was in the studio crowd last Saturday.

He looked suitably embarrassed when the camera showed him.

I don't watch this show-in fact, I hate it. The wife, though, was very excited that Tommy's son was on and even more excited when the man himself was in the audience.

One of my memories of Tommy was in a 0-0 draw with Barnsley at Oakdale. We sat right behind the goal open to the elements. The ball came across and Tommy was about a yard out from goal. He could have blown it in, but he was caught off balance and could not make a connection. Talk about a sitter. We should have won that game. Can't remember the year. 1999 or 2,000? I think Dickie Bird was Barnsley's chairman.

Do try to keep up. I mentioned this back in July after seeing it on the local news-magazine programme in Bournemouth. 😆

My memories of TW are him scoring a goal from a million miles out (can’t remember the game though) and him snatching a white sheet off some protesters at the Southend game in May 1997.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

I was at that Barnsley game. I remember all the Town fans being escorted to a nearby leisure centre, with a bar, immediately after parking up near the ground.

It definitely wasn't Muscat who took Widdrington out at Sunderland as I previously thought, as he never played for them.

Oman you got that wrong…

Not sure if I remember the incident, but Sunderland’s resident psychopath in those days was Kevin Ball, so possibly him. Certainly remember Widdo playing at the Stadium of Light in that old amber kit with the navy sleeves circa 1999, with Ball playing for them.

Edit: just looked it up on Soccerbase. Widdrington was subbed in the 42nd minute, with Ball getting booked - so probably was him.

Good shout Poojah. It was definitely Kevin Ball - not Kevin Muscat. I was 50% right!

Soz, KM, I must have missed your Widdrington/Strictly exclusive on the fishy over the summer! 🤦🏻‍♂️
