It’s torture and if we could get promoted without it I’d gladly miss out on a day at Wembley
Exactly. Much rather be champions, preferably with about six games to go!

One for the statto's but... when have we ever had a start to a season like this? If we can't convert this to automatic promotion, with this form, it'd be a real shame.

I think people underestimate just what a mammoth task it is to win a league. We know that we've got a very good squad who compliment each other well. But it will still need luck to go in our favour even just being lucky with avoiding injuries and no bad referee decisions against us. Long way to go yet.

I can remember Exeter in 72 and Sheff Utd in 80. Amazing days etched in the memory, but in both seasons, it never felt like we had a champion side in October.. We've got Notts, Dagenham, Boreham Wood, Chesterfield, Solihull, Halifax (twice) and most likely a resurgent Southend coming up from the end of this month til the New Year, a much tougher run of fixtures than we've had. If we can get through those at around two points a game then I'll be more confident in us being serious contenders for top spot. We've had an impressive points haul so far, but we've also shown a potential soft underbelly at times, conceding three to Barnet, conceding five goals in an hour of football when reduced to ten men and just being plain awful the whole 90 minutes at Maidenhead. This has been in an easier run of games.. Understand people getting overexcited with having a decent side given the lack of success we've had over a long number of years, especially those that haven't had that feeling of winning a league before, but that true "champions" feeling never comes as quickly as this in a season.. I don't want to dampen down the enthusiasm at all, but a poll mid-October showing 48% thinking we're going to be champions shows a little too much on the expectation side with 33 games to go..

In season 2017/18 Shrewsbury were top of L1 after an unbeaten 15 game start to the season.
Shrewsbury did not end the season as champions and, in fact, did not get promoted either.
Can't remember who their manager was at the time ......

I don't think voting in a poll with optimism quite means anyone is saying it nailed on, so the ridicule and scoff is probably uncalled for. More to the point, if you can't strive to be champions when you're top of the league, when can you?

I totally agree with the previous poster.
We are currently top. We have a strong team and first team squad. Can score goals (and from 14 different players) and our attacking play has won us 7 penalties already. We have won when losing and won away at top rivals. We have a good defence and creative/physical midfield.
We have excellent teamwork and spirit. We have good individual players. We work hard for each other. Only losing on a plastic pitch, with only 10 men in a rainstorm. We have excellent vocal support both at home and away.
Scunny fans would probably say that they would finish bottom.
We should allow ourselves to have a small degree of hopeful bias with a fantasy question. . I am positive that every poster who said that we would finish champions did NOT go and put a bet on to this effect.

To much quality in this team at this level to say anything other then champions . Only seen two championship winning sides in my 55 years of support And I have not felt so confident in seeing one in the last thirty years plus. Yes something could throw us ff course such as Hurst leaving or Covid shutdown but subject to that I would get your house on it at 13/2 which is a ridiculously generous price.

I don’t think anyone’s taking the poll with any seriousness but it’s nice to acruslly be in a position and deserve to be in it that means we’re sat top of the tree.
We outthought and at times outplayed a side that’s spent a fortune and was the clear favourite to go up, they’re arrogance and inability to form any consistency is hindering that team.
We don’t have an arrogance, May be a slight swagger but no arrogance and body is taking anything for granted. We’ve no reason to worry about any team in the league but being cautious is sensible. We’ve a tough run but we play County, Chesterfield, Halifax and Southend all at home and when you’ve won every game at home so far it’s hard to think we’d do anything other than that.
Soft underbelly or off day? Even the top teams have off days, the sensing off did us at Bromley, and we didn’t play well at Maidenhead but we won’t play full tilt like we did against Wrexham or Dover every game.
We spent the summer, or plenty did, moaning about needing a striker, yet here we are, top of the tree with a striker that’s scored goals and a team that all contribute from back to front…imagine if we’d had a striker.
One thing we’ve created is a togetherness, a bind and a desire to win, that goes a long way in any league. We’ve seen players getting their body in the way, players missing penalties but then scoring clever, calm goals almost straight after. Players have flourished as the season has gone on.
After the years of dross, the way we’ve retreated since returning to the league, the backwards steps the club has made and the disaster that was Ian Holloway, fans can be forgiven for getting a tad excited and carried away…
