Congratulations to academy graduate Jaz Goundry for earning his first professional contract with Grimsby Town.

There's a photo of the 6ft 4in seventeen year old defender on the back page of today's Telegraph, he looks as pleased as punch.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

He is a big unit let's hope he can play at a lot higher standard and get us some good transfer money into the club.

Got the look of a young Steve Bruce. Let's hope he is somewhere near as good.

He will need to do that at least if he is to get us some decent money.

No pressure then.

At 6'4" he doesn't fit the profile of a Town youth team player. We tend to play smaller skillful players.

We all know it's not just looks that attract the ladies.  Remember Peter Crouch's famous line?

That would be Peter Crouch of Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton.

Unlike Jaz Goundry who looks like Steve Bruce and hasn't yet played a first team game for Grimsby. I'm doubting he'll need a sh*tty stick just yet.....

But I hope he's going to be a Town legend and that I can love him (in a platonic way) for years to come.

Steve Bruce's goalscoring record for a centre half is phenomenal, by the way. Over 100 career goals (he got 19 in 50 appearances for Manu in 1990/91).

If Jaz Goundry is a quarter of the player Bruce was, he'll be a top player for us.

Imagine if he’s a fifth as good as Steve Barnes.

He better not pull out of a tackle like Agatha Christie did.

11 penalties that season for Bruce.

Still incredible for a centre-back to get 8, especially as he wasn't the biggest of defenders either.

I also reckon if you counted back our last 11 penalties, it takes you to Kevin Donovan's missed one against Northampton in 1998.

Didn't Ashcroft score 12 for us one season and most of them were from the spot?

What a waste of £500k he was.

In the 1998 Play Off Final at Wembley?

That was definitely Kevin Donovan who missed.

Oh yeah! Apologies. I always remember that shot from about 12 yards that he slammed against the bar, that obviously confused me. I thought when he did that it was as guilt-edged a chance as the penalty. Strange how time messes with your memory (well, mine at least!).

It’s the other way round with me. I can remember that like it was yesterday. I can still hear the crack as it hit the bar. Ask me what the last result was and I would struggle.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
