A little bit crafty of us to line-up with 12 players but these are desperate times I suppose.

Edit: original Tweet from Town had 12 players in the line-up with Hendrie also starting. Now corrected.

Looks to me like a "shut up shop" starting 11 then try n nick a goal second half, just hope it doesn't bite us on the posterior..

I'm reading it as 3-5-2, with Hewitt part of a back three.

Eastwood
Hewitt - Waterfall - Menayese
Morais - Rose - Matete - El Mizouni - Bunney
Adams - Payne

Can't see how else it would work.

I'd guess so with El Mizouni the furthest forward of the midfield 3?

Adams isn't a striker and Morais isn't a wing back so can't see it being 3-5-2. 4-5-1 with the wide men high can work well. Kept us up under Jolley.

BBC (what do they know?) have guessed us line-up to be:

                                     44Eastwood
22Hewitt             6Waterfall             26Menayese           3Bunney
18Morais      4Rose      20Matete              38El Mizouni      45Adams
                                           40Payne

Seems plausible to me (what do I know?).

Edit: 4-1-4-1 with Rose shielding the back line, maybe?

matter of opinion...felt he was a little light on end product myself but i will take into account trying to pick a cross out on that ploughed field would be difficult.

We've lost I'm sorry guys.
Not because of the team, pitch, tactics etc but because I've got us in a bet to win.

Christ. When Hewitt is the best defender out of those 4, you know you've got problems
They're going to score at least one  :

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Town looking ok, if they manage to get to half time without being behind we could win this with the wind behind us 2nd half.

Knowing our luck the wind will change

Fortunate perhaps, but it was only possible because we've shown some attacking intent and backed it up with some ideas. Absolute night and day between this and our performances going forward in recent games.

We do look a little vulnerable at the back at times and I'm still to be convinced by Menayese, but this is much better.

Oh no where did we get bunny from
He'd look out of place playing left back for crows nest

Seriously though, I don't think we can play many more games with him let alone the rest of the season

And we've scored. I'd have taken that after 33 mins, with a strong bench (by our standards) as well.

We are absolutely rancid at the back. Amazed we didn't sign a replacement for Waterfall (although if he was replaced with someone at a similar standard to Menayese it wouldn't have made much difference)

He has to be replaced at half time and given his p45. Never seen a player so out of his depth

Bit of gamesmanship there by Crawley. Player going down when we have the ball in their end.

Not one of them have been capable of stringing a 5 yard pass together and we look vulnerable every time the ball comes towards them

Bunney struggled with his passing against Newport also I remember, hopefully that comes with game time but that needs to come quickly as we don't have 6 or 7 games to get them match fit.

Menayese has not impressed me at all as yet, the defence still looks very dodgy.

Hopefully we can take advantage of having the wind going for us in the 2nd half.

Positive we scored first
Negs, gave away another free kick for their goal, wall useless
No attack only 1 or2 up in their box
They attack in numbers

2nd half all to do but the wind should favour us. Crawley showed how to play with the wind so lets hope Town have learnt.

Difficult conditions I think in a couple of small patches wevee knocked it around well. I want us to come out second half with the wind on our side and improve and get more on the ball.  This is winnable! Utm

Ps id get someone alongside Payne aswell.

Well we lack pace at the back mixed with the wind against us so that made us look really shakey that half

Don’t deserve to be level. Simple as that. The second half will tell us hi much of that crap we can blame on the wind.

We looked like a team at Newport despite having only just met, now we look like who’ve only just met met despite having weeks together to get to know each other.

I'm pretty happy with that, we were playing some nice football till they scored hopefully we start doing that again in the 2nd half.

Waterfall is having a mare and Hellmans is yet to do anything to impress.

The wind looks like its playing a big part hopefully we can use it to get Payne in over the top

Shame we conceded, but at least we look like we could win it for a change.

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

But we aren't are we?  I'm sure you are well aware of how difficult it is to play in very windy conditions, I think we have done well against the wind, and their goal was the result of a midfielder making a bad tackle for the free kick they scored from.

But the defence particuarly Bunney/Meneyasie look very poor

You must be watching a different game to me if you’re singling Menayese out over waterfall. No coincidence that they’re aiming balls over waterfalls head.

2nd best the moment but at least we are level. Wind causing problems for us which we can hope it is the same for them 2nd half. It is still a hard watch and the table standings looks ominous for the Marriners

will take 1-1 at half time playing against a wind like that and after serving up some easy chances for them.

Positives - looks like we have plenty of energy and desire and a decent goal from someone being brave/ confident enough to shoot on site.

Negatives - too susceptible to a simple over the top ball , when we defend we are chasing the ball like schoolboys, especially around our area, swarming to the ball but leaving men open , cant afford to do that all night or they will eventually pick the right pass.  Payne completely isolated. Close to leaving our legs out in the area too for the simple penalty concede.
Left side again our weak point going forward , Adams looked lost there.

Good wind behind us should help second half so if we can keep some of the energy and test that keeper with some shoot on site policy we may come out on top.

Everyone saying about the wind, but it's their clever, tricky players up front who are causing havoc.as Abdul said a crawley penalty looks almost inevitable.
I'd just remind you've theyve only won 1 in 6 ,and yet they look a step above us

midfield gone missing barring rose tbh, mattete and el no where to be seen.  if they get a grip on the game it may help the defence.
swap the wingers and i think bunney could use morais help.

Surely you'd put hendrie on at half time

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

I don't mind Roy Keane making £60,000 a week. I was making the same when I was playing. The only difference was I was printing my own - Mickey Thomas

The area you are trying to protect at corners is the goal - Chris Kamara

Positive substitution
Sorry don't think mich of Bunny and Hewitt still a nothing player.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Abject officiating, this referee is a clown if he couldn't see there was contact there. Adams was past the defender so why would he be going down deliberately in that position outside the area?

He not fit enough to keep up with play.

He’s trying the old PE teacher trick of not leaving the centre circle and guessing if he’s not sure.

If everyone was putting in a similar level of effort to Morais we might have a chance of winning this. Doesn't reflect well on the rest of the squad when a 35 year old has the highest work rate out of them all!

Thank intercourse for that.
Paul Hurst wants shooting for playing him, even worse for keeping him on the field. Pay him up for Christ's sake

Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

jesus........awful second half , not much better first half.....but we got away with it.   Not pretty at all, massively disorganised at the back throughout.
A welcome 3 points but with Barrow winning it only maintains the status quo really. Just hope Southend drop points tomorrow.

Ugly win thank god. Far more questions than answers. But I was so frigging annoyed at Hurst for keeping on a player who was so bad it looked like he could single handedly cost us the win. Thank the lord he misses the next game.

If so why is in the side??
He was shocking

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

That has got to be the worst performance in an age. And absolutely scruffy, ugly daylight mugging of a win

And I blooming love it.

Get in you Mariners

2 positives. We scraped a win and bunney got sent off so Hurst can't pick him next game. What he sees in him is a mystery. Mayonnaise not much better

Football is a funny old game. After that I’m less convinced we’ll stay up than after the Newport game. We were awful but I’ll take the win......not at all convinced though after that showing...

Winning ugly is better than losing playing well at this end of the table.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,

26 points from 18 games somehow seems far less daunting than 29 from 19.

A new team of footballers, far from brilliant, but a win, i think the players will be relieved along with the management & us fans, there is now some light in the tunnel, i happen to think a weight has been lifted here & i believe we will improve on the back of this. UTM

Bloody marvellous. All about the result tonjght.

Let's kick on and get a run going now we've got the monkey off our back.

If we do, Barrow winning tonight will be completely irrelevant, as will Southend's result tomorrow night and the outcome of the league that should never be mentioned.

Never watched the game tonight, didn't listen to the commentary and didn't look at the result before reading this thread.

Reading the comments on how cr@p we were/are, imagine my surprise that when I get to half time, we are drawing and at full time we have won.

Judging by some of the comments, we have a worse defence than your average Sunday league team, a terrible midfield, and ineffective strikers.

How on earth did we win?

Given our team is still getting to know each other; the lack of confidence that come from a long winless run and the terrible weather tonight, I am absolutely ecstatic that we have picked up three points.

Just seen that Barrow won away, which takes the edge off a bit, but you can't control what others are doing.

All in all, a decent week for us results wise apart from the Barrow result tonight and I'm convinced that some other sides are going to drop down to the bottom end.

It wasn't a good performance by any means, but it was 3 points and a start.

As the saying goes play well and deserve to win you lose. Play crap and win you get  3 points. In our position I'll take a crap game and niceties can start next season.

It's odd, I watched the game without particularly following this thread and I really didn't think the performance was that bad; in fact I thought it was a marked improvement on anything I'd seen in the late Holloway / early Hurst days.

We didn't create enough, but I thought we went forward with far more vigour and more ideas than we have for some time, and I at least felt like we had a midfield. Lack of goals aside, the midfield has been the area of greatest concern in recent weeks and I though the likes of Matete and El Mizouni, plus an improved Rose, looked a lot more robust and energetic than previous line-ups.

Was it perfect? No. Bunney in particular looked suspect, though I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt given that he became a dad only yesterday, and there is work to be done at both ends of the pitch. But let's not forget, that is the first time we have taken so much as a point off a top-half side since we beat Cheltenham on 12th October. In fact, if I'm not mistaken it's the only other time we've done that all season.

For me, it's massive progress and a sign that we have a fighting chance of getting out of this mess.

I must have seen a different match. Defence highly suspect, couldn't cope with the high balls and speed of attackers. Hursty should put Bunny back in his cage. I'm happy for his new family but it's not an excuse for not doing your job, turn up at any work place and say I'm not putting a shift in because I'm a new parent and what do you think would happen?

Engine room needs improvement, couldn't find the attackers. Kept the ball reasonably well but failed to make use of it. They attacked with 5/6 in our box and we attacked with 2 or 3 if we were lucky. They used the wind to there advantage and we didn't, what's more they also showed how to attack facing the wind. I thought Eastwood did well especially stopping the lob shot. His distribution in the wind in the 2nd half let him down a bit but I felt more reassured with him than Macca.

Any performance is better than the end of the oloway era and 3 points from a crap game is always acceptable. We need to do more especially in the last 3rd, stats say 2 shots on target in 90 mins. Not enough and we'll definitely stay up.

Yes I saw it sa DB did. I’m more worried about our performance and staying up from tonight as I was against Newport. Still we won and hopefully with out the awful conditions we’ll play much better because in reality we were lucky to get the result tonight. UTM!!

everyone keeps saying about the wind and pitch, but it was the same for both sides, and they didn't seem overly hampered by it - they certainly used the conditions better than we did plus they looked v dangerous whenever they got the ball up top.
ps whoever said mayonnaise was motm needs their head examined. apart from Hewitt (&Waterfall's heading) the defence was a disaster waiting to happen and got very lucky on a number occasions

pps haven't seen any praise for yet another goal saving challenge by the much maligned hewitt

Haven't read the whole thread, but did anyone mention Hewitt's ridiculous back jump double leg block in the box in the second half? It was like a low flying reverse Higuita.

Imagine what some of the comments would have been like if we had lost again!

The team hasn’t played a meaningful game for a fortnight and training must have been disrupted by the weather as well. The only pluses are that it gave time for some to get a bit fitter. The Eastwood signing looks the most significant when the defenders play like school kids. Their keeper made two McKeown type errors and our didn’t which shows why Macca needed a break.

Yes it was crap and I am no fan of Hurst but it is 3 points ........ and at this stage I will take crap play and 3 points any time.
