I came across this quote from Yes Prime Minister

Humphrey: "The only way to understand the Press is to remember that they pander to their readers' prejudices."

Hacker: Don't tell me about the press, I know exactly who reads the papers:

The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by people who actually do run the country; the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; the Financial Times is read by people who own the country; The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.

Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?

Bernard: Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big t!ts

So which paper do you read ?

I haven’t read a paper for over 10 years, I did used to buy the papers for the signal box I worked (we’d take it in turns whoever was on the early shift would buy them for that week) i’d do the crosswords back then but nowadays would not waste my money on any paper.

Grimsby and proud!

Used to buy the Independent and the 'I' but don't buy one anymore. Used to buy Private Eye too, but again, no more.

Read one or two rags online.

The introduction of social media and immediate news shifted folk away from print based media, or so it appears.

The bias seems more skewed than ever these days and whilst it’s important not to find oneself in an echo chamber, you can see why some folk have developed quite fixed mindsets.

It’s good to see both perspectives I guess but there’s only so much anti immigration and sensationalism one can stomach. The concept of a newspaper intrigues me and if I’m off on a long train journey or flight I’ll often buy a couple, never the Sun or the Mail or the express though. I will often buy a paper in a foreign country, novelty value and sometimes great to see what’s going on there on a less global level I suppose. In Italy I always buy the Gazetta Sport (the pink one), excellent sports newspaper.

Well put together periodicals are worth buying these days, Proper Mag for instance is an excellent men’s fashion quarterly/monthly, can never remember when mine arrives and there’s some great football ones; late tackle and WSC are worth a read.

As for newspapers though, it’s rare I’d purchase one, it’s online for free and also they just seem to be full of nonsense these days...

Hardly ever buy one. In fact I can’t remember the last time. Like most people I guess I get news feeds on my phone and read what looks interesting. Sometimes it’s even the Daily Excess*!

Back in the day I used to read the Guardian (the novelty value in the office was great  ) and I even used to buy the Daily Telegraph in the late 80s/early 90s. Obviously I was aware of the Tory bias but it just got ridiculous in the 1992 general election so I put it down in disgust and never picked it up again.

* usually when I start reading the article (the headline is often a prediction of doom about the Euro or the EU falling apart) then find it was what some Swedish bloke said what he thought might happen 10 years ago. I guess they’re trying to counter the stories of actual bad news about Brexit.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

I subscribe to the I. Closest we have to a neutral paper in actual print. Bite sized chunks of info and with occasional contributors across the political spectrum. Oh and the best General Knowledge crossword on the planet at the weekend.
I was brought up on the Daily Telegraph which in those days was without the absolute right wing bias instilled by the Barclays.
The Mirror is a parody of the campaigning paper of the 70s.

I miss the indy. Have no interest in the app. Occasionally buy the i, have a quick read and do the crossword. I don't read a paper thoroughly enough for the broadsheets, and so less than a quid suits me fine.

Sometimes get the Mirror for the bumper puzzle section

I bought the GET last weekend, only because I hadn't bought one for a while. What a waste of time that was. I wouldn't even wrap my chips in it.

The GET was an excellent paper, local, breaking news and several editions. The Mail group took over and turned it into a tabloid and axed the extra editions including the Sports Telegraph.

It now has new owners who ditched the local editorial staff and favours reporters, as I know them, or digital media correspondents etc, from Ull, Scunny, Lincoln, Huddersfield and even Devon !

The last report I read told on line readers were told Caistor and Kelsey which doesn't even exist (as it's either North or South Kelsey) are in North East Lincolnshire along with reports about the new county of Northern Lincolnshire.

The GET is no more and the replacement isn't fit for fish n chips.

I thought the GET had been taken over by Zane Powles?
