Will be interesting to see if this 5 or 3 at the back......I would imagine 3 knowing Ollie's determination to get on the front foot. Must be a few tired legs or some carrying knocks to make 5 changes.

McKeown (c), Hewitt, Waterfall, Öhman, Glennon, Garmston, Benson, Whitehouse, Tilley, Vernam, Green.⁣

Subs: Russell, Pollock, Hendrie, Clarke, Grandin, Wright, Hanson.

3-4-3  line up confirmed by IH.

Not suprised he made the odd change..... but 5 !!

Colchester on fire at home so to change so many personnel and starting formation..... Brave/Stupid/Genius ....time will tell.

That’s the first real ‘what the fùck?’ moment of Ollie’s reign so far. Bold to make five changes and a formation change for a tough away game like this.

Has 3-5-2 been confirmed? I was struggling to work it out in truth. Ah well, that’s Colchester’s scouting report in the bin if nothing else.

Fingers crossed this works. Gut feel says this will either be a disaster or an absolute mastersroke.

Think he's probably written this off before it started and wanted to see how/what the others can do.
Be interesting to see Tilley on the right and Vernham on the left, Hewitts not a bad right back(no Hendrie though) and think Pollock has been given a rest.
Hanson needed resting before his calf went again, not surprised Clifton's been left out completely.
If we get hammered Ollie's tactics will be questioned but in his judgement we must trust..
Go on Greeny, bang another one in like the Chelsea goal🤞🤞

Don’t forget his equaliser against the same opposition in the home game, let’s be honest other than the Chelsea goal not much else to remember about his goals but he will give 100% just not sure he can play that lone role but we are about to find out!!

He’s urine poor. If Olly manages to turn him into a decent player then so be it, but I’ve seen nothing to suggest otherwise.

With Green on Vernam might as well be playing on his own. Mind you how Vernam plays you wouldn't notice any way

balderdash! Our marking tonight so far has been shocking. That was coming every time the ball was in our box.

Lot of clumsiness going on, weird missed headers and hitting themselves in the face with the ball that ends up at the feet of a Colchester player.

Another delayed reaction.

It's like watching World Cup 1970 with satellite delays.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

Green with the useless assist :p

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Ball looked to bounce off his ankle as he tried to take it with him rather then intending it

FFS. Shocking defending and clearing of the ball. We're all over the place tonight defensively especially  at set pieces.

Not watching or listening to the game. Are we against the wind this half? Can make defending very tricky, assuming it is as blustery down there as here.

We need to wake up at the back last 3 goals we’ve conceded all very similar.

Hate to say it but both goals conceded from Ohman not clearing his lines, waterfall is giving him pelters!!...
Still, think we are playing some good stuff, just need to get Matt Green off, unfortunately he's not playing well and offering nothing...
Get Hanson on to hold the ball up and give us an aerial threat in the box..

Looks to me if Macca spills the ball their players are faster to react than ours.

Love Macca to pieces but he is so so stuck to the spot far too often than being on his feet. Pulls off some wonder saves but wonder how many mistakes he makes

Some shaky defending at times in the wind, and the marking on Hewitt’s side has been very suspect at times (I’m not attributing all the blame to him - it’s everyone’s job to pick up).

Still, we’re trying to play some decent football, succeeding at times and making mistakes at others which have almost cost us on a couple of occasions. Still this is a transitional period and that’s to be expected.

I say we win this 4-3 with the wind favouring Town in the second half.

Can’t blame Macca for that one, took two deflections our defence needed to be as sharp as their attackers

We've played some lovely one touch pass and move football scored a fantstic goal and given Colchester a run for their money in the first half. However, our defending has been shocking especially at set pieces. We look all over the place and outnumbered on the flanks especially. Garmston looks knackered all ready maybe he wasn't ready to start.

Playing some good football but too much keeper 2 defender to keeper to half way line to defender to keeper, . We need to move it much quicker when playing out from the back. 3 virtually identical goals in last 2 matches, we need to sort out this closing down our half clearances from corners, Garmston looking a bit out of sorts and Tilly a little too excitable, need Green replacing early on if we dont score quickly.

Tough debut for Garmston away from home with 5 changes. Green has no such excuses. Max needed to press and run at Colchester. Chas will tire.

Green still stealing a wage I see. Can't blame him for the two goals though

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

Playing well in bits. But not enough bits. Don't seem as athletic as them (as usual in this division). We're a bit slow to react. Control much better.

Hanson coming on seems to have made a big difference, they wanted to sit back and they really struggle to deal with him.

3 brilliant goals
Come on Town

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Jesus Christ. Rest him for the rest of the season otherwise he won't be here for the next.
Radio Chorley will be giving that one a mention

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

If we thought Charlie’s goal against Stevenage was a good goal, his third tonight is absolutely brilliant.

Must be goal of the season even with a few more months left - just simply outstanding!

Put a contract in front of him, let him write the salary. Ridiculous that such a talented player was not given the chance or surroundings to excel. Glad we've finally got a proper manager!

Great game and win and if Charlies goal would have been scored in the Prem they would be showing that run and goal for the rest of the season what a way to top off a hat trick, his 3rd goal was good enough to win the game on it's own merits and Macca at the end to secure the points, well done Town.

What an absolutely fantastic result and performance from The Mighty Mariners tonight. Vernams 3 goals were all excellent but that 3rd was probably one of the best I've seen by a Grimsby Town player for many a year.

And what can I say about Ian Holloway and the all-round difference to the whole mindset around the club, You my friend are a bloody genius.

Obviously motm picks itself but how good is Glennon? Liked Gibson but he is another level. Think Elliott Hewitt deserves a mention for a very good second half as well. Lovely ball in for the goal to make it 2-2.

Hewitt has generally been decent at right back. That post read poorly before kick off and certainly didn’t age well.

Obviously motm picks itself but how good is Glennon? Liked Gibson but he is another level. Think Elliott Hewitt deserves a mention for a very good second half as well. Lovely ball in for the goal to make it 2-2.

Whitehouse assist was pretty special

That was thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
We looked a really good team and with the summer window the future looks really bright.
And what a hat trick by Charley boy.  Three really good goals  the last one absolutely sensational
I watch the home game against Colchester and the difference is amazing

The change in commitment, confidence, workrate and most noticabely playing style in the six weeks since Ollie's appointment is absolutely incredible. We'e playing the best football I've seen us play since our second tier days, even if we do still get caught out from time today.

We're now averaging just shy of 1.7 points per game since New Year's Eve; that kind of form over a season would've been enough to finish 5th. Eminently more difficult to do that over a full season than nine games but the progress in such a short space of time is staggering. We've now played three sides on the trot with very realistic promotion ambitions, all of whom have a considerably bigger budget than us, not to any of them nor looked inferior at any point along the way.

Even with two games in hand of most sides and Morecambe at home up next it may be too much of a long-shot for the play-offs this season, but things are seriously looking up.

Someone will tell me if I've missed a more recent one, but I suspect it's 23rd March 2002.
Grimsby 6 (Boulding 31, 85, 87, Pouton 45, 72(p), 85(p)), Wimbledon 2 (Shipperley 24, Agyemang 42).

We've come back to win from two goals down about 4 or 5 times since then.

Come on Forza your starting to talk like Hurst & Jolley 😄😄😄

Think one of the real positives that emanates from IH is he solely concerns himself how we are going to play and let’s the opposition worry about us, brilliantly refreshing.

Colchester forum is a must read.

We played our dream midfield again.  (Well, they must have had nightmares).

Grimsby were better than I expected.  They should challenge at the top next season.

We haven’t lost at home to them since 1972 - until tonight.

It is always cold, foggy and windy at Blundell Park.

Was that 3rd goal that good?  ( the poster must be demented).

It’s been a few years since I’ve believed , we’ve got to kee the best part of this squad together for next season

In what way? he played pretty well to me.
He may not be playing classy defence splitting balls through but i doubt there are many better at winning headers and crunching tackles in the division.

Ohman reminds me of a very well known Lincs League centre back who was described to me as the best defender in  the Lincolnshire area. My mate said he had to be good because every time he cleared the ball it just came straight back. It’s the same with Ohman, great in the air but puts so much pressure on his own defence with his passing.

Waterfall is experienced and a better passer but he is always likely to put a foot in too close to goal. At the moment he is better than Pollock who looks as though he needs a rest. Davis is the best of the bunch when fit.

https://www.grimsby-townfc.co.uk/news/2020/february/extended-highlights---colchester-united/
just watched the highlights. couple of points

1) looked like a handball from Waterfall (?)as he blocked the shot in the box
2) bit sorry for Ohman - Glennon missed the header which put us in trouble, then got Ohman's way as he tried to clear
3) 10 passes for the first Vernhams (!) goal, a thing of beauty in itself
4) bit pisssed off that the cheating, diving Theo robinson (was a disgrace at Swindon last year) got on the score sheet
5) is this one of the longest match threads ever?

You win games by scoring goals and playing your best players not sending them on loan to the team at the bottom of the National League. Simple really.

Vernam clearly needed that shot in the arm in terms of confidence which he clearly wasn't getting at Town at that stage... I felt some of the fans had already made the kind up about Charles and he probably felt that. Going out on loan was the right move for me... The question is would Jolly have brought him back into the fold... I don't think he would have and like some of the fans had probably already decided he didn't fit in.

Did look like a bit of a foul by Hanson before our 2nd equaliser and I'm surprised the ref didn't give it the way he was blowing for every little thing when one of their players fell over.

Sending him off to Chorley was one of the few things Jolley did right. He was a star there and could play just as he wanted. Then brilliantly for him, Holloway arrives and Vernam gets played in the way he needs. Perhaps the lad deserved that bit of luck considering his injuries. Not sure whether he reminds me more of Reddy or Quick Mick Boulding.

Who was in goal?  I don't think it was Russell, and definitely not McKeown.
