I did this years ago, something called Big Apple Greeters. It's one day and free ( they say no tips too but we gave our greeter an easter egg we'd brought with us as a thank you) and they take you around some of the places they love but you might not see as a tourist. Gives you a great opportunity to ask questions about the city.
