How times have changed. Who remembers Shaun Cunnington clean through against Bolton, bearing down on the pontoon, only the keeper to beat, and was scythed down from behind at the knees by a defender desperately trying to get back. A stonewall penalty to 99.9% of fans there. The referee casually waves play on...
At Sunderland - Jack Lester clean through this time after a defence splitting ball; once again flattened by a tackle from behind just as he was about to score... referee waves play on without a second thought.
Compare that to this week and this season in general. Penalties given at the drop of a hat for any physical contact whatsoever. Put your arm out, its a penalty. If the ball hits your hand its a pen. Utterly ridiculous.
Basically a penalty is a goal (unless taken by Sam Jones - only joking) and referees must be certain that a deliberate foul has been committed surely?
I would like to see free kicks inside the box, unless it is an obvious a penalty - ie the stopping of a goalscoring opportunity. To basically give a goal for an iffy hand ball at the edge of the box with the attacker going nowhere seems absurd to me when you consider how difficult it is to score goals in open play.
The Accrington penatly in our last home game was minimal contact, the player going nowhere, yet they get a goal. It may or may not even itself out, but to me a penalty should be a nailed on pen and not what is being given at the moment.

Prime example in the Liverpool cup tie tonight. Minimal contact, pen given.

The Bolton penalty you refer to, the linesman actually flagged like mad for the foul. The ref refused to even look at him, turning his back on him waving play on. One of the biggest travesty of justices I have ever seen, both live and on TV, in my long lifetime.

The point tonight Ginny is that the player was being held back by an arm across his chest. Even if it is minimal it still prevented him from playing the ball. Free kick anywhere else on the pitch , so why not a penalty ?

Josh's excrement being pulled. Penalty or not? Paul Hurst's career saved by that decision.

After That shaun cunnington incident (probably the most blatant foul I have seen at BP) and the ref waved play on, the linesman actually ignored the ref and carried on waving for a foul. The ref had to stop and point to him and instruct he play on. It was that bad a decision That's how I remember it anyway but my memory does play tricks!

Wasnt George Courtney the Ref ? I can still remember that illegitimate nearly 30 years later, mind you we had the last laugh when we won the last automatic promotion place and Bolton ended up in the play offs

Lol more than evened itself out Jack was the absolute master at finding defenders outstretched leg inside the box. He must have coned most refs over the years.

Yep, Brian Hill. About 70 yards behind play chose to ignore his linesman. Something that blatant would at least be reported by an assessor these days. Possibly.

As refs, we’re instructed if you “think” it’s a penalty, it probably isn’t. One of the worst I’ve seen given against us was at Aldershot when Hope was sat on his bottom and the ball was kicked against his arm behind his back. How that was deliberate handball I’ll never know.
As for the Bolton one, surely someone has video of it...

One of the most blatant non penalties more recently was against Lincoln when there was a goalmouth scramble at the Pontoon end. One of the Lincoln players got badly hurt (broken leg maybe). In the melee, a Town player had his legs completely whipped from under him as he was about to shoot. Would have been a goal, no question.

I think the most "significant" penalty decision against us in my life time was at the Cardiff play off final when Parkinson was up ended , with the game at 0-0....what could have been ..?

when you said Lincoln i thought you was going to come up with Nathan Pond's hanball off the line that went un-noticed by the officials

I'd forgotten about that. Seen some poor refereeing decisions in my time but that one was special.
