I expect it to be Matt on a permanent.

New keeper: https://www.grimsby-townfc.co.uk/news/2018/january/town-sign-championship-goalkeeper-on-loan/

Interesting that it's until the end of the season. I think this will give McKeown genuine competition for his place. Good age too.

I saw him for Blackburn a few years ago in The Championship and thought he was a very good keeper. Good signing in my opinion.

Sounds up for it, and wants to play rather than warming a bench, great attitude, welcome aboard Jake.

Like the look of this lad. You need a big bruiser in this league and all respect to Killip, he hasn't the experience or presence (not yet at least) to command the box. I expect the new chap to go straight into the side tomorrow, hopefully with an equally experienced striker on board.

We definitely needed a keeper due to McKeown’s injury having him out fairly long term and as said it’s good that he’ll be able to push JM to win his place back (hopefully) until the end of the season. Kean is at the age where he should be trying to make number one shirt his own too which should mean he is well up for the challenge. Decent signing on the face of it.

Necessary signing I think and it will be interesting to see what happens when Macca returns to fitness.

I know we all like Macca because he's been a good servant but really if this lad is a decent keeper with a command of his area. It will become obvious that actually a keeper could be important regardless of Macca's fitness.

Signed until the end of the season, sent out on loan to get some game time and get up to speed, only to do his hamstring and be out for a couple of months. Just unfortunate really and i've no idea if he's fit or not yet.

I like the bit about where he says he spoke to the manager and he explained how he likes his teams to play. RS " Just remember son, when you get the ball boot it as far upfield as you can and the strikers will sort it out ".

I suppose RS will be expecting him to stay back and defend at corners as well

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Haha this bloke hasn't played a game yet. Mckeown has played about 400 for us and people are seeing him off.
Mckeown is a really decent keeper and I actually think he's massively under appreciated because he's been here so long.

Macca is a decent keeper if we want to maintain League 2 mediocrity but if we have aspirations in getting into League 1 then we need better. Interesting that when Macca put in his transfer request last year or during the summer he wasn't approached  by PH. Even if he'd been second choice he would surely have been financially better off.

Not really it's just a fact. While we were non-league Macca was one of the best in that league but he's at a middling level at league 2. If we want to move forward next season we'll need to strengthen across the park. I'm not anti Macca - he's a great pro and along with Pearson, Bogle, Disley and Podge did a massive amount to get us promoted and I'm really grateful for what he's done, but football's not a sentimental game and if we want to get promoted a better keeper may help us.

It might of course turn out that this new keeper isn't as good or is at the same level as Macca and if thats the case then Macca may well get another contract.

I think you could do well in League Two with an average keeper and average defenders as long as they work as an organised unit. McKeown does have his weaknesses but show me a player playing in League Two who doesn’t.

Think I understand why were not doing well onfield. if I was a player for Town and read the forum, I would be p*ssed off too. Already we are kicking Jamie into touch, and for the length of time hes been with us and declined other offers, we want to kick him into touch. I know the players are 'maybe' to blame for results, but they are told to play to tactics from the Boss, so there lies the blame. Its a bit like the England team, there are great players who play great for their club, but are then reigned back to obey tactics from the manager and not play to their capabilities, I guess its similar here. Let the lads play to their own ability and maybe we can get somewhere. So come on guys, lets not call the lads, we can call the Boss, but lets not let the players read negatives on them, I for one would get less enthusiastic running out the tunnel thinking theres a few fans out there not wanting me to play, UTM.

From a couple of Mansfield fans, where he was on loan last season

Quoted Text
He was decent enough for us last season, and would've been happy with us signing him in the summer. He's a good shot stopper, and decent on crosses but has the odd lapse in concentration which leads to mistakes.

Good signing for League 2 overall.

Quoted Text
Echoed, very solid for league 2.

Championship, league one-ish keeper. Should give the defense more stability.

I think you could do well in League Two with an average keeper and average defenders as long as they work as an organised unit. McKeown does have his weaknesses but show me a player playing in League Two who doesn’t.

But if we want to be in League 1 we have to aspire to getting better than average League 2 players.

Not seen him play but another keeper was absolutely necessary whilst Macca is out. Not knocking Killip but he hasn’t looked comfortable to me. Obviously early days in his career though and I hope he continues to improve.
Kean to start tomorrow please (I’m sure he will).

You’ve missed the point entirely. Whilst there are exceptions higher up the leagues (Leicester 2016, Huddersfield 2017) of lesser teams being organised enough to be successful - in League Two organisation is king. The players aren’t as technically gifted or consistent as their fellow tradesmen higher up the divisions so if you can get a team pulling in the same direction nine games out of ten in this league you will do well.

Chant for the new keeper -

I've just looked through the list of songs recorded by Keane and found.......

Once you go up a division you need to change some if not at least a 3rd of your team due to limitations, if you go up with League 2 players playing out of their skin every week and as organised as one unit, better players in the league above will exploit those limitations and that will eventually cause those players to dip and then the slide back begins. We need a good mix of players who are already good enough for league 1, players who will develop into competent league 1 players and that comes at a cost. Either great scouting through rough gems, loans or investment.

Errr yeah - which is why I said an organised team would serve you well in League Two but probably not higher up the pyramid. Hurst did what he thought he needed to do at the end of the promotion season in order to make us stronger for L2 which for the following season (16/17) was probably proven correct althoug) there appears to be another anomaly in my arguments tonight and the released players all seem to be playing a level above us now?

I will too because I meant to say that an organised team will only get you so far further up. It’s been a long three-and-a-half day week!

Correct me if I'm wrong

but

Wasn't it this window that Newport chucked a lot of money at it last season to get them out of the mire.

Looks like FGR are trying to do the same this window.

Really? Is Gavin Gunning a 'marquee' signing? Whatever that means (apart from 'a big tent').

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

I think Gunning will strengthen their defence, which is what they need. Port Vale have flourished under Aspin and moved up the league. He wanted Gunning to stay and the fans did too, so i think he's a better player than some on here give him credit for. I liked him myself.

thought Gunning was shocking myself, had one good game IMO...rest of the time just got in the way of the back four he was supposed to be helping...awful distribution .....always a danger of giving free kicks or penalties away and woefully slow........mirrors my own Sunday League career

Or could it be that they haven't scored a single goal in last three games?
