I know it's only a friendly but it would still be great to beat the Germans in Germany.

England looked very good that half and should be 1 or 2 goals to the good. Germans surely won't be as blunt second half?

Typical. Put a Spurs shirt on him and Dele Ali would have buried that chance.

Played well first half. Unfortunately it is unlikely that Germany will be that bad in the second half so we will probably regret missing so many chances.

All being well they wont ruin it by making endless pointless substitutions in the 2nd half

intercourse that 'Can't pay?we'll take it away' is on 5.
The Iceland game did me in as far as England go.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

Cracking goal though. Nice of England to celebrate the Union by wearing a Scotland shirt.

Well they're not fit to wear the red shirt of England.

How so? Intelligent formation, patient controlled play, accurate passing with pace ,good movement and invention.not one bad performance. Just unlucky that the chances just didn't fall right. In fact it was nothing like watching England.long may it continue.

Good test that, better than thrashing some remote country 5-0 or whatever. So many players under 23 in that squad, Stones, Dier, Alli, Rashford, Redmond, Ward Prowse and Lingard all with room to develop and all regulars for their PL clubs. Add the experience of Hart, Cahill and Lallana and I think we look good. Think the plan is to grow this squad for Euro 2020 and the World Cup in 2022.

Agreed. The most intelligent play i have seen from England for a long time. Gone is the big hoof to a target man and we have a fair bit of skill and pace in there. England were unlucky, but at this level, it's about those little moments.

Very pretty. Promised much but achieved nothing.

No cutting edge. No goals. No result.

Bad luck? Perhaps ................... but amazing how often Germany has good luck.

We may know a little better after Lithuania.

Overall we played well tonight before the changes. If the media leaves Garth alone and he gets time to take them forward then we may have a side that could achieve what we have all wanted for years, a credible tournament performance! We have a real gem in Alli god knows how far he could go.

I was not sure about Southgate but I guess where international football is concerned he's as qualified as any English manager to get the job.

nice to see an England team performance, not a collection of  "so called superstars" disappointing us. The starting 11 played as a team, looked disciplined and comfortable on the ball.

The big noticeable for me was that we lack a world class striker, our promising play didnt result in too many chances and the two golden ones we had should have been put away. A Michael Owen style striker running off the shoulder and across the line would fit the approach play but sadly we dont have one at the moment.

No doubt the big names will re-appear for the "real" game against Lithuania and i wonder how well we will play as a team then.

Sorry forgot to add, Vardy embarrassed himself and proved what a knob rash he is with that dive in the 1st half.

Pleasantly surprised how we looked tonight. Looked comfortable on the ball , quicker anticipation and not like rabbits in headlights.
Second half not so good when Germany changed formation but def something to work with . Rashford looked dangerous late on .
Miss your chances though and you get punished by a screamer

The formation is definitely one that suits us, with walker and rose, when he's back, being strong attacking fullbacks. Alli and lallana were very impressive technically, to receive the ball in tight situations and open up space. With a better player alongside dier, it could work well, although that centre mid region is a big weakness at the minute.

Against what i thought was a poor and very sloppy 1st half Germany, we looked ok. Nothing more. Right from the off in the 2nd half Germany changed gear, tweaked their tactics and we looked ordinary. Granted, after so many subs it is hard to maintain intensity and momentum but with Germany at their poorest we didn't score and when they upped their game we had no answer.

with a better player than Dier i would suggest, not alongside Dier....spent quite alot of time sliding in on his @rse this evening which in international competetive level results in either yellow and red cards, free kicks or getting side stepped and made to look stupid.

Very true, hopefully the fact that Gareth Southgate knows a lot of the lads from his U21 days will help him develop them as a team.

England are obviously work in progress, and like most things in football managing expectation is probably just as important as the end result. If Southgate is to exceed he has to be given time.

As a keen non England fan watching last night I can agree about the way the team worked as a team not as individuals, but what I did think strange was the fact that the German goalkeeper didn't have a single shot to save in the second half, and that when England went a goal down with 20 minutes to go there was no real attempt to try and get the goal back. I know it was only a friendly, but accepting the plaudits this morning it would have been much better for them had they managed to get a draw over there by a spirited fightback?

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

I think a lot of the failure to threaten near the end will have been to do with the endless changes which always occur in the latter stages of friendly matches. Doesn't give the team enough time to bed down and create much of a threat - I agree about the lack of urgency, though. Lots of side to side and backwards passing in the last few minutes rather than going hell for leather for an equaliser. Losing 2-0 wouldn't have been a disastrous result if we'd been pushing on for an equaliser.

Ultimately, it's a results business and getting into a habit of not losing games is a good thing.

Yeah it's interesting in that they brought on the likes of Andrei Schurrle and Thomas Muller and we brought on Lingard, Rashford, Redmond and Ward-Prowse which would suggest the England squad is a development squad. The amount of young talent is strong if it can be correctly fostered then who knows, will we ever win anything? I doubt it but we might just get some pride back after the debacles of the last few tournaments.

Ward Prowse looked very shaky, nerves i presume on his debut, Lingard hardly touched the ball and neither did Rashford. Redmond had a good few touches but didnt contribute a great deal.
