When we get back into the Football League the priority is to stay there and never be in this situation again.

But, if the club continues to be run like a village flower shop it will become a perpetual struggle to avoid sliding back into the Conference.

There is only one way to be certain future generations of Mariners supporters will be able to see League football and that is to have a long term financial plan aiming to establish us as a League 1 club again. Shoestring soccer is dead and buried. Winging it on a season to season basis doesn't work. Clubs that do that, fail.

The only long term plan we ever hear from the club and the majority shareholder is to move out of BP. Not once have I heard him talk about a long term plan for the playing side of the club. Not once have I heard him say what the club is going to do in the event that we get promoted. Until he does and until we have a manager who clearly shares a long term ambition to see the club back where it belongs (i.e. higher than L2), getting promoted is unlikely. But, if we did, it could even do more harm than good.

Sitting in the boardroom waiting for a mate to cough up a few bob in sponsorship or a kind lottery winner to help out is no way forward. Arguing that nobody comes up with an offer for the club is no excuse. The club needs substantial financial injections as a matter of urgency regardless of the ground issues. The hard truth is that even the euphoria of promotion could rapidly become deep depression again without it. Nothing the fans can do about that so over to you Mr Majority Shareholder.

A very insightful post if I might say.

I am beginning to think if we do not go up this year,

I will never see us in the league again,

I hope I am wrong though.

I keep waiting for the re-incarnation of Getyourfactsright to get on here and reply to such a well-put opinion but I won't hold my breath because he doesn't know the answers himself. I'm very pleased that our lottery winner put his hand in his pocket to the tune of 50k but it's going to take a bit more than that to restore this club to a position from which it can build a sustainable future.

I think you are right there. He may be a successful businessman but by his own admission he relies on instinct in the business world. Long term planning is not something he does. Even the new ground had no contingency plan when Great Coates fell through and the current plans do not appear to have any connection with the future status of the club. So clearly Mr Majority Shareholder does not know the answers. I just hope he knows the questions.

Which in a way suggests that he wants his legacy to be a new stadium not necessarily a return to football league status. I know which is more important to the majority of fans!
