it's just random, i let the computer do it and we had 85 points and bristol finished on 70 odd and way outside the play offs

It's partly random, partly based on form, just like real life. In any football match between two teams usually one of the biggest factors is luck. The better teams are more likely to win but it's not guaranteed - reflected in bookies odds. That's why I produce the average tables (which you can see of the football calculator site at http://footballcalculator.co.uk/forecast.php) which are averages of many different possible future seasons.
