I have just come across a notice in The News of the World & Empire Newspaper dated 1st October 1916.
It reads:

" Mr Sid Wheelhouse, the well known Captain of Grimsby Town Football Club, who was a Lance Corporal in the Footballers Battalion, has died after being gassed while serving at the front"

The great war touched everyone. I never knew there was a Footballers Battalion.
As we approach Remembrance Sunday, in addition to remembering all the fallen, spare a thought for Sid.
Anyone know any more about Sid or the Battalion?

I think the club are doing something for Tuesdays game v Halifax to remember all the fallen but with a special feature on ex players who lost their lives

Lots of books available about the Footballers' Battalion. Try "When The Whistle Blows".

It's amazing you found this in the NOTW amongst the stories based on the interceptions of soldier's homing pigeons.

Thanks for that ma ringer.v interesting. For those interested in this period, or local history, the grimsby chums have a fascinating and moving history. So utterly futile and do many unnecessary lives lost. Plenty of links on Google which put our present lives and worries into perspective
