As if the Woking highlights weren't enough to get us in the mood for Saturday, what a superb feature to put on MP !!!

Bit before my time but can still remember that great diminuitive team with Cumming, Brolly, Waters, black magic et al.
What a keeper Batchy was too (good save !)
It doesn't get much better than this...
Barry Davies to boot, if this isn't worth pennies per day, I don't know what is.

http://www.player.grimsby-town.....uth-1-Grimsby-Town-3

Plus an "Ask Noj" feature for fans to send their questions in to Andi too.

Top job OS !

Awesome, love seeing these old games.

They need to put the Grimsby Town 3 - 4 Arsenal, FA Cup game from 1986, would love to see that.

I was sat/stood (cant remember) in the front row of the osmand stand. 2-1 up at half time and thought we were gonna beat the gunners. Then Charlie Nicholas ruined it all. One of the best games of football I have ever seen. We were bloody awesome back then it makes me sad to think how far we have fallen.

Joe Waters was possibly THE best player ever to wear a Grimsby Town shirt. Joe, Batchy and Bobby Cumming are my 3 favourite players ever. I remember this game well, back then it was very, very rare for a game from the 4th Division to be shown on TV at all.

I didn't go I was 10, all I remember is standing outside near where that pub used to be near the old Boots, at the Dixons shop in the old Town open shopping centre for over an hour, hoping it would come on the TV in the front display ha ha!

You're correct it was the start of our decline from becoming an established 2nd flight team to 4th Division fodder until Lord Buckley was sent to reinstall some pride. Having said that it was a cracking game, possibly the only game I have enjoyed which Town have lost and Charlie Nicholas scored 2 amazing free kicks that day as well as a 3rd goal to complete his hat-trick.

Yes we had some good teams in those times,

I enjoyed watching all the home games and a few away ones as well,

Hopefully we will get back to that level soon!!!!!!!!!

Waters was fantastic. Not only for the incredible skill he displayed, but also for his never say die attitute and his total committment.

I remember one game in particular. It was easter and we were five points adfift at the bottom of the league. We were playimng Wrexham and went two goals down. It looked curtains for us. But Waters had other ideas and played his socks off, scoring a great individual goal and leading a fight back. We won 3-2 and stayed up that year.

My favourite Town player of all time.

Good old Batchy, typical brilliant save he used to make and kicking the ball out his hands with his left foot, and the dead ball kicks with his right, legend.

IIRC that was the first Match Of The Day for about 2 seasons as there was a big dispute about TV money and all football highlights had stopped until that day.

Great to watch stuff like this, a nice reminder of how football used to be. Nice finishes from Ford and Brolly. Tony Ford seems to be playing up front... I always thought he was a full back come winger? A few tasty challenges flying in, it would have finished 5 a-side in todays game. Some pretty ropey defending from Pompey, I love the attempted backheel to the goalkeeper for our 1st goal, then he has the cheek to turn round and blame the keeper! Also what is their keeper doing for our last goal?

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

Wasn't sure if it was ITV or BBC but I just remember that it was the first football highlights shown on TV for ages because of some sort of dispute.

Dead right...and what an inspired choice it was to feature us on their highlights

If that had been shown live (after such a long break with no footy on TV) the UK would have had a real treat the same as we did at BP

Shame we lost but that was one of those games where you know you had given your best and if Charlie Nicholas hadn't been on top form we might have won

It was off the screen for a year, I believe, because they wouldn't pay the rate that the Football League wanted - a bit different to today's bidding wars?

Charlie Nicholas scored his one and only hat trick for the Arsenal that day.....b*****d! Arsenal fans housed in the Pontoon for their jaunt up north.

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

I remember another occasion when we beat Pompey 3-1 away which was an FA cup replay after we'd drawn 0-0 at home ....65-66 season

I remember going to the home game with my dad and remember some Pompey fans being on the bus back from BP to Top Town to get the train

My dad had a chat with them and said what a long journey they had…didn't mean much to me as I was only 8 at the time but then I remember the replay result coming in midweek and being allowed to stay up to hear it

Probably one of the first occasions when the FA cup meant something to me…we drew Man City away in the next round which I'm sure some on here will recall
