After seeing a positive performance once the formation was changed it would be interesting to see how S&H line us up for braintree, yesterdays formation could just be a 1 off and we could revert back too 4-4-2, either way things are lucking promising with the return of neilson aswell.

Surely if colbeck is injured its just a simple swap for neilson. That said, Niven was excellent when he came on yesterday as was thanoj so would he get dropped for Niven?

Whilst I'm sure it's a headache for the managers it must be a decent one to have...

Neilson has to come back in surely. Given that Marshall seems quality too it would definitely be worth playing them both if possible.

As aldi said its a good headache too have, for once youve got players on the bench such as miller, neilson, wood, thanoj or niven who all have a shout for why they should be playing, at present it seems we finally have a squad that is playing well instead of just the starting 11.UTMM

I think we will revert to 4-4-2 an I honestly think Thanoj will be dropped as Scott looked a bit annoyed with him doing the fancy stuff in the defensive third.

I think and hope we start with Marshall and Neilson swapping wings.

We have got a really strong squad this season,

Who ever they start with, the subs will do just as well,

I think this is going to be our year.

So do i, but i think we look a lot more solid with Niven in the side. With Nielson, Marshall and Disley all looking to get forward it would leave us exposed to the counter attack, this is where Niven is worth his weight in gold. If we need a creative spark later in the game the we bring Thanoj on.

Neilson will be back in, then it will be Colbeck or Marshall depending if Colbeck is injured or not, though I can see them starting with Marshall either way.

The only decision they will have is Thanoj or Niven and I reckon they will go with Niven as Braintree will be a big physical side.

Niven's type of opposition to break up in the middle of the park against Braintree - we don't want to be out-muscled and over-run, even given the talents of Neilsen and Marshall on each wing!

Just hope he keeps the passes simple, and more importantly accurate, and then let the ball players have their time on the ball.

Hatton will also need to find his defensive qualities at their peak against physical forwards.

This formation after colbeck went off worked for me

                       Mckeown
Hatton     pearson         pond      thomas

                       niven

           disley             thanoj

   hannah       cook           marshall

Personnel aside, isn't this formation an option too HLAS ?
You posted it yourself and it's quite similar to your no2 I suppose.

Although Marshall was doing a good job getting forward out wide ?
Unsure I fancy him in a midfield 3 tbh but can only go off the bits I saw (in my case not loads and loads)

Thought the 4-3-3 system worked fantastically well yesterday and is be tempted to keep it for the Braintree game. In that midfield you have everything in Nivens tireless defensive work, Disley's work rate and forward runs and Thanoj's vision and passing ability. It would be a shame to break it up! I would also like to see a front 3 of Nielson, Cook and Hannah with Marshall dropping to the bench and using him as an impact sub against a tiring full back. The defence picks itself IMO, with the only question mark being who to choose at right back, I'm a massive Bradley Wood fan but after yesterday I think it would be incredibly harsh to drop Sam Hatton.

For me it would be:

                          McKeown

Hatton.        S Pearson.    Pond.       Thomas

                           Niven

              Disley.               Thanoj

     Hannah.          Cook.        Nielson

Subs: Miller,Artus, Marshall, Southwell, G Pearson

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

This is what I suggested earlier barring right back. Can't think that Brad will get back in on Saturday.

I'm going on what I have seen of the two lads early in the season. Ye Hatton got two with free kicks but cant defend and Wood can, that's why I would go with Wood. Unfortunately the times I have seen Hatton hes been dross.
Whatever team is put out on Sat should be able to deal with Braintree. Easy win 3-0 UTM   ---- Wood hat-trick :-0

I agree about Hatton, a couple of times he went missing at the far post and it was a poor ball he gave away in the second half when they ended up shooting just over.

I also thought Thanoj who at times looks to play some good passes also gives the ball away too easily, in the second half, one ended up with Pearson getting booked as he was running back to defend after a poor free kick by Thanoj.

Both Pond and Pearson look dangerous in the oppositions area yet too many times our corners and free kicks are crap.

Hatton has hardly played so a couple of mistakes in his first home game shouldn't mean he should be dropped (I know they aren't his first mistakes but he was proven at Wimbledon and can't have just lost his skill). If scoring 2 goals doesn't get him into a starting lineup then he might aswell pack his bags. We're at home so should be looking to attack more, which will suit him.

Wood is a better defender than Hatton. Its just reason I would start with Wood.
Hatton may be the worlds best form 25 yard free kicks but if ye dont get them free kicks in a game hes not going to score.

Pretty sure Hatton will keep his place. Sat was his best game so far and will have improved  his confidence, so it would be devastating for him to be dropped. A big incentive for him to pay well which will benefit the team. Competition for places is good. Braintree are more likely to try and stop us and not be so open as Woking. If we can score early that might change but we are likely to have grind out a result. May go back to 442 Neilson  and Marsall on the flanks. I think we need Niven to do his break up job, so Thanoj may well be back on the bench, at least to start with. If we need a bit more guile to break them down he is a good option to come on.

Start off with 3 CM's or 2 ?

These decisions don't get any easier !

Just cos I think

- Cook did so well
- don't want to drop a striker
- think we SHOULD have enough in the centre with Niven
- generally SHOULD be playing 2 in the middle at home + we're hardly hunting the ball down in packs even with 3

I'll go with this...

Quoted from jimgtfc
                Mckeown
Hatton Pearson Pond Thomas
Marshall Disley Niven Nielson
             Cook Hannah

Subs: Miller, Wood, Thanoj, Artus, Southwell

Gotta start right and control midfield though! (that said will Braintree pack the midfield or park the bus ?)

tbh wouldn't mind starting with 3 but which striker then gets dropped is a toughie.

I think people forget what standard we are playing at. All the players give the ball away and take poor set pieces sometimes.

In various threads, Artus, Niven and Thanoj have been criticised for losing possession but that is what you get at this level. Wood gives you more defensively and Hatton more in attack. Depends on the opposition as to who is the most effective. Woking are well dodgy at the back and we exploited that on Saturday.

Both Hatton and Niven have been part of promotion winning sides, so they must have something about them.

Artus is a good player when he's on it but has struggled a bit this season, probably due to a lack of games.

Braintree will be no pushover going on last nights cup performance which showed Tranmere to be easy winners, Braintree played some neat football throughout the match but failed to convert their chances.
They have a tall quick striker who can turn quickly and shoots on site, on Miller`s showing in the reserves yesterday where he showed his speed on more than one occasion, he just may be another option in defence
