I thought he was ancient when I was a kid years back...clever make up and a great, great character. Always loved Dads Army, could never understand why the other actors were dying off yet Corporal Jones was still alive at 105 or whatever.
Sad but a great legacy to leave behind, my son watches the show nowadays, classic stuff.

Before he went into acting he was a soldier so he could probably relate to some of the characters and the way the army works.  He was a brilliant actor who always played the older gent.
