Apologies, for a belated new thread on this.  I have been away with work.  (Also about to set off for the match today after it started snowing last night).

Somebody posted on here a couple of weeks that we should basically "go for the FA Cup but field weaker teams for the FA Trophy, the reasoning being for the latter approach that you do not make any money to the final and games take priority over league games".

This seems a sensible plan. We elected to rest our captain for the FA Cup.

It is not the only plan that can deliver success though.  Crawley got promotion to the League by also reaching the 5th round of the FA Cup.  They got promotion again last season - and reached the 5th round of the FA Cup.  They also made a lot of money each time.

Fleetwood got promotion last season - and reached the 3rd round of the FA Cup. These 2 teams had more money than us and maybe bigger or better squads.  York City haven't though.  They got promotion last season ans won the "micky mouse" cup.  In the previous 2 seasons they reached the play-offs and reached the 3rd round of the FA Cup. They got stronger at the end of the season as the games increased.  They maintained a winning momentum.

In the last 2/3 years successful promotion for these 3 teams has not been diminished by cup success.  I would argue the opposite - that "success builds success, character, consistency and a winning mentality".  Play your best team. We have lost out on cup success and more money in recent years - bar the JPT final.

This is linked to the Kiddo defeat,  Somebody else posted recently that we had a strong squad and cover in all positions. A response rightly said that "nor for the LB position".  This came so true last Sat in the first 15 mins.  Pond was also affected by the defensive changes.  We do not have a particularly strong squad in quality.  Barring injuries though, we do have a strong team and should play our best 11 for every game.

I agree with Big Chris on another thread today.  We can get back to winning ways = at home and in the league.

Its about confidence and winning mentality a thing the duo and at least the previous two managers have said just wasnt in the building.
That is however turning so it was disappointing to see just how poorly the refreshed team started last week, despite having a very respectable start to the season the home supporters are turning up with the possibility of three defeats in a row today. Harsh reality is that floating supporters wont be won over by that kind of run.

Given our recent run of form in the Cups, Bath, Chasetown, Salisbury and all then a good result in our first game at least would have been nice and would have wiped away memories of Dartford defeat.

A win today over pre season fancied Macc will help boost the confidence again, build on our solid start and cement our top end place a bit further.

Agree! Winning games is imperative. I know that sounds double Dutch ( ah............. Menno Willems), but, confidence is important and a "winning mentality" is the be all and end all.
Sports psychologically suggests that it's worth an extra 15 (ish) % of energy. And will also have teams worried. Sports mentllity has a lot to do In the professional game these days and tbh, although Eileen Drury was a BAD idea, Glenn hoddle had the correct approach. Players dont go into games tense and get to play their natural game.

It is the old age mentality though, carrot or stick treatment. What do you think is best?
Rule with the iron fist (fnar!) and have every player worried but extremely motivated
Or take kid gloves and allow your players freedom and a relaxed approachn
I don't think there is a set rule. But, each person is different and it is near enough impossible to micro manage a huge bunch of personalities!

Bl00dy shame that despite a good start and overall good peformance yesterday that today i have received the usual comments from people who no longer go....see Town lost at home again !! Its a fact we did but the performance deserved all three in my opinion but those who support from the fringes dont see that do they?

not the cup. its our home form, due to not taking chances in front of goal that is hindering out promotion chances

I wouldn't say that, with the FACT that the team at the top Newport have also lost 3 games (the same as us). Though yes they have won more but they are ONLY 6 points away, which in this league can be made up for at any time.

IT IS NOT OVER YET!!!

Well we played well after the cup defeat but their keeper played a blinder .  The performance was better than the result.

Back to my original point on Cup success mirroring or supporting promotion.  Last Sat on RH  JT quoted AB as saying cup success directly led to promotion.  That was in addition to then winning the JPT at Wembley.  Not to mention doing so well in the FA Cup and the League Cup the same season (97/9.   We only lost in these 2 cups away to top 6 Prem clubs (Liverpool and Leeds).

We played 66 or 67 games and won the most important one - the last one - the playoff final.

Best performance was probably winning away at Carlisle Tues night after winning with the golden goal on the previous Sun.  About 48 hrs difference to come back to earth - and win.  That is how to win a league game after a cup game.
