Leaving for Sunderland apparently

John Tompson ‏@JohnTompson

Grimsby Town's Robbie Stockdale is leaving #gtfc and joining Premier League Sunderland as Youth boss.

Well done Robbie, shows what a good job he has done. Buckley to make the step up to main Youth team?

oh and we get a friendly against Sunderland next season out of it

John Tompson ‏@JohnTompson

As part of the deal, Sunderland to send a first-team squad for a pre-season friendly next summer #gtfc

A top man.

Back to his native North East and a decent job.

Is it A youth coach or THE Youth coach?

Wow.
Bloody impressive that. Obviously a big loss for us but it's hard to begrudge the bloke that sort of step up and a move back to the north east.

All the best, Robbie. I hope we give the job to Buckley for as long as he wants it.

Neil Woods might fancy a return, save him commuting to Walsall, where I understand his youth team had a very good season.

Good luck Robbie. The Youth Team finished bottom of the league with just 4 wins in 24 games last season.

Maybe his successor might improve upon that record?

Pleased for Robbie, top bloke, and done a very decent job whilst the club lost its youth funding. Worked well with Adam Smith who also seems to be a valuable asset to the club.

Watkiss is a good call.

Watkiss is a terrible idea. Judging by the style played under him as a caretaker "get it down the channels!" oooh, inventive and how many youth team players came through with him here on the coaching staff? Not many at all. Bring Woodsy back or get someone totally new involved. The club could do to rid itself of the 'old boys' act a bit and bring some fresh input in.

Yeah that i understand, but not really seeing how losing Robbie Stockdale would be 'the final nail in the coffin'. If anything we could employ someone on a smaller salary and therefore be in a better position, or am I missing something?

Or he might just not fancy a return to the club that unceremoniously dispensed with his services? That applies to Neil Woods too..

It would make sense if there is no finances to run the team to finish it now rather than take someone else on. Im not saying that i want this to happen and i hope it doesnt, but in financial terms it makes sense

Under the new Elite Development scheme the club does now qualify for some funding.

It has taken a huge amount of effort for the club to get accepted under the new structure for youth football and it would be futile to tear that up now.

The development of youth has significant benefit for the club outside of producing players for the first team

Any chance of a link to info about the scheme and what clubs have to do to qualify?

Also, what extra benefits?  Is this FA funding or more towards building a fan base, links to other football clubs, reputation?

Good luck to him but remember all but 1 YT got released last season under robbie's stewardship so we could do better, how about joining with grimsby institute who has john mcdermott, gary childs, gary bloomer and graham rodger, the latter once scored an own goal past me a few years ago

Don't think this is Robbies fault at all...

1) Some years you have bad years and some years you have good years

2) What do you expect? 8 YT's to be given deals? Even Manchester United, with their top class facilities would never bring that many through successfully.

3) We are in the BSP and unfortunately haven't got the resources to be giving young lads another 3 or 4 years to progress...

Robbie did a good fantastic job under the circumstances and I'm sure he's a massive factor as to how the Youth team is still around now, as I'm sure if it wasn't for his tireless work the YT would have been given the chop when we fell out the FL. Well done Robbie, gutted to see him go but a brilliant opportunity for him, all the best mate!

But maybe the standards are high, the players didn't develop as expected or a hundred other reasons. I would rather we retained one good player than several mediocre ones.

Good luck to him but remember all but 1 YT got released last season under robbie's stewardship so we could do better, how about joining with grimsby institute who has john mcdermott, gary childs, gary bloomer and graham rodger, the latter once scored an own goal past me a few years ago

All but one were released? That's a good thing. It shows the standards are high and and professional, we cannot be keeping on kids who won't make it just because they are nice kids.

Why do people want ex-Town players for this job? Just because the last two have been reasonably successful doesn't mean any ex-Mariner will be. There's probably some up and coming coach somewhere who could do it better. Just a case of looking.

Kevin Donovan's profile seems to have all the right qualifications for the job, as well as the experience.  I doubt he will want to uproot from Halifax anyway, born and bred there, he could keep it running anyway seen as he has quite a few staff.

I am sure Grimsby Town Football Club will find the right person for the job though, seen as they have been very good at finding the right person for other jobs such as the Manager position over the last 10 years or so...

Congratulations to Robbie, anyone who is good at a job deserves to better themselves in life and he has just done that.

For replacement how about Kevin Donovan? >> http://www.kevindonovan.org.uk/
QUALIFICATIONS
 • 17 Years as Professional Footballer
 • FA Level 3 coach ( UEFA B coaching award )
 • Academy coach for Huddersfield Town FC
 • Academy coach at Park Lane College Leeds

If his highest coaching qualification is the UEFA B licence then he isnt sufficently qualified for the job,

Yeah looks like you are right, unless the qualifications have altered again.  I guess it would put him in good standing to actually move on to the UEFA A Licence.
Quoted from Coaching qualifications needed to work in football in the UK
Level Two – Certificate in coaching football
 • Individuals with a level two qualification will be able to find work in the local community, with local authorities and with soccer camps in the United States.

Level Three – UEFA B Licence
 • Individuals with a level three qualification will be able to find work in Centres of Excellence and Academies.

Level Four – UEFA A Licence
 • Individuals who wish to work as a manager or a coach in the professional game or as a youth academy manager a level four – UEFA B Licence qualification is necessary.

Level Five – UEFA Pro Licence
 • A UEFA Pro Licence is a mandatory qualification for managing in the FA Premier League and UEFA competitions.

The Youth Team finished bottom of the league with just 4 wins in 24 games last season.

http://thefishy.co.uk/story.php?id=8501933

Maybe his successor might improve upon that record?

I've always liked Robbie Stockdale and always regretted that he was probably past his best fitness-wise when he played here.

Never heard a bad word said about him, either as a professional or as a coach, which was why Rob's info above came as a bit of a surprise.  In the light of that, I am also surprised that some were touting him for the full manager's job at Town not so long ago.

Anyway, Sunderland can obviously see something there and I wish him all the very best.

Good luck to Robbie just feel a bit angry because we looked after him through his injuries, gave him a coaching job we probably helped him with getting coaching badges. So i feel a angry that he's leaving us after we showed loyalty.

Best of luck.  He took a non-league youth team (who all bar 1 or 2 were released at the end of the season) and could have beaten Newcastle away if they had converted a penalty in normal time.  Would have played Man United away next.  That alone says a lot about his abilities and suitability for a better position in the game.
