One of the best sports commentators ever, as was said on the BBC earlier he had great comedy timing and extensive use of the English language. I would highly reccomend his book 'Bellies and Bullseyes' if you like darts or not.

A sad loss indeed.

Prior to moving into sports commentary Waddell was one of the first staff recruited by Yorkshire TV when it launched in 1968, becoming a reporter on Calendar (which brought him to Grimsby on several occasions) before going on to produce it. Whilst at YTV he devised 'Indoor League', possibly the most bizarre sports TV programme ever, and created a number of children's shows for the company. For the BBC he wrote Jossies Giants.

Throw in his writing pedigree and Waddell was much more than the darts commentator he will be remembered for but I suspect he'll want no greater epitaph than that.

Very sad.

The man was a genius in timing and use of the English language and probably the best commentator of all time.
