Not directly relating to Mariners, but is football chat......

New book out today that will interest anyone, like me, who lost many an evening searching for glory on championship/football manager:

Looks a decent nostalgia trip

I must admit I've spent a large chunk of my life playing these games. I started with Champ Manager 00/01, having originally played Premier Manager 97, 98 and 99 on my PS1, but found myself mainly stuck with Football Manager 2005, I think I kept going back to that game until 2010. Addictive, but once you get into it you realise your losing so many days of your life.

Unfortunatley I am an addict as well. Infact, I'm off to play now.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

I found CM/01/02 the best and i bought the update patch last season off ebay, it does become very addictive (you say to yourself - i'll just have half an hour - but 6 hours later my wife says you only said you were going on that thing for half an hour - i'm off to bed!)

I never really got into them, felt too time consuming for not a lot of moral 'reward'.

Football manager on cassette for the ZX Spectrum is the only version i have played. The biggest dilemna then was whether or not to choose to just go straight to result or view highlights !!
You soon realised that when watching the highlights if your team actually got a corner it was always followed by a goal.

That's because the goal was MASSIVE. Compared to the little stick man players, it was the size of a house. The farting noise every time they kicked the ball was pretty funny though...

I think I started on CM2 (97/98 season) and seemed to wait ages before the 'radical' CM3 version was released (in March - almost when the 98/99 season was over!). I bought every version after that until 01/02 - which was the best - and then they started making big changes and introducing the 2D match engine, which divided opinion at the time I seem to remember.

I stayed on CM 01/02 until I tried FM 05, which I never really got into. I bought FM 07 and had a decent campaign with Stalybridge, and only FM 08 have I really got into. I had a couple of epic games on that version. I've tried getting into FM 12 but it's so detailed it's become a bit of a chore to play. I like all the updates and playing with teams in their correct leagues, but wish you could apply that to an earlier version.

It's a shame, really. In recent years I just haven't had the hours to spare on the game, so when I do play the latest version I don't get very much done. I think I got through one season almost in real time... and then the next season's version is released.

Gone are the days of racing through a season in a few days (or less, if you were proper hardcore). It was ace when I was at school though, when I didn't have a job or any responsibilities!

To Madeira, by the way... what a player! Did anyone else buy Stilianos Doukas? Can't remember what version he was on, but the Greek under-21 team was awesome.

You soon realised that when watching the highlights if your team actually got a corner it was always followed by a goal.

Another funny thing was attacks almost always came in 2's.
Though very occassionally you could have 9 attacks, miss the lot and once they got one 1 right at the end, were virually bound to score !

As for recent versions of FM, conceded only 5 goals at home all season (and finished 6th !) - wondering if that's a record.
I'll never reach the heights of others winning the champions league - takes far too long to play properly.

I've just got town back into the Championship after 4 seasons on FM12, but the most realistic thing I've noticed on the game is, it has England ranked 29th in the world
