Don't know who he is, but to show respect for a town player, R.I.P. Willie Purvis.

RIP Willie: I played with him for Station Athletic in the Sunday League. One Sunday he forgot his boots and borrowed a pair that were 2 sizes too small. As he hobbled off at the end of the game, I said "Willie, you must be crippled". His reply in his broad Scottish twang was " Aye, but not as crippled as their winger. After he got past me the first time I made sure he never got past me again".... Great character.

I remember Willie's first home game for Town was against Bournmouth. He came in for the injured Cliff Portwood and scored. Then Portwood came back to resume his partnership with Ron Rafferty and we got promoted. Willie never got much of a chance really and he went to Doncaster at the end of the year. It was a mystery why he never did better in the pro game because he was not a bad player as many locals who played against him will testify.

RIP Willie.

Yeh !

Remember defending a corner against him many years ago.

All I remember was afterwards my mates telling me that the ball finished in
one corner of the net, and I ended up in the other .

Like many of the old pros who went into local football, he was hard as nails.

Great lad !

in the realm of pro football you do need a certain degree of mental toughness that maybe is not so needed in other professions due to the dog eat dog scenario  eg competition for places

One life,one love .
