Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven

An absolute Masterpiece, This song holds so many memories for me, It was the song i requested to be played at my dads funeral last year, I have listened to this song through good times and bad times over the years, The guitaring is top drawer - Every time i hear it the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

Complete Control by The Clash. Full of anger about the fact the band were forced to issue a song by the terms of their contract. Forget the Pistols -punks finest hour (well 3 minutes anyway)

The bit where you get the echoed lyrics and a change of tempo still get the hairs on the back of my neck after 35 years.

This is a ridiculously hard question!!!!!!! Just the one?? Blimey!!

I'll stick my neck out and say A Day In The Life, The Beatles or Abide With Me, which as you probably know is a hymn. I'm not religious in the slightest but it reminds me of a few people that aren't here any more. When sung by a proper choir it gives me goose bumps and a bit of a lump in my throat.

You fill up my senses,
Like a barrel of Tetley's,
Like a packet of Woodbine,
Like a good pinch of snuff,
Like a night out in Cleethorpes,
Like a greasy chip butty,
O, Super Black and Whites,
Come fill me again
Na na naa naa naa naaaa TOWN!!
Na na naa naa na na naaaa
Na na naa naa na naaa naaa
Na na naa naa naa naaaaaaa!!!!!

Difficult to pick just one, but I'd have to pick a guitar prominent bluesy song as I love guitars.

Tumbling Dice by the Stones is my favourite followed by Little bit of love by Free. After that, loads of Stones songs but Queen's Fat Bottomed Girls is a standout song, especially with Paul Rodgers on vox.

Andrea Bocelli - Canto Della Terra brings back many memories, some good (looking forward to seeing the wife and kids after serving away from home), how amazing our world and nature is and the bad (sunset ceremony's - repatriating serviceman killed in Afghanistan)

Lyrics translated in English:
"Song about the Earth"

Yes I know
My love, that you and I
Are together briefly
For just a few moments
In silence
As we look out of our windows
And listen
To the sky
And to a world
That's awakening
And the night is already far away
Already, far away

Look at this world
Spinning with us
Even in the dark
Look at this world
Spinning for us
Giving us hope and some
Sun, sun sun

My love, you are you my love
I hear your voice,
And I listen to the sea.
It sounds just like your breathing
And all the love you want to give me
This love
That is there, hidden
Hidden among the waves
All the waves in the world
Just like a boat that....

Look at this world
Spinning with us
Even in the dark
Look at this world
Spinning for us
Giving us hope,
And some sun, sun, sun,
Some sun, sun, sun.

Look at this world
Spinning with us
Giving us some sun,
Mighty sun
Mighty sun
Mighty sun

Was going to say Flakes by mystery jets.. But I'm changing my mind to spider in the snow by the dismemberment plan. It's a song that tells a story which is nice but also has good bass which I look out for being a bass player.

When I first started listening to Definitely maybe a few years ago that was the only track I used skip. Looking back now what an idiot I was, probably in my top 10 Oasis songs.

Waterloo Sunset is a great shout from Les, but for me it has to be Oasis - Live Forever.

Heres another classic - one of the best songs ever made for me.

The lyrics to this tune are so powerful.

It reminds me never to take my son Harry for granted, We often sit and listen to this tune him and me.

You take the address of the link i.e. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vay1WtlqPh8 and copy the sequence of letters/numbers after the "=" for example with that video its "Vay1WtlqPh8" then bang them into the tags:

and there you have it!

But can you listen back to back more than a few times without being bored to tears ?

Cheers !

Well you know, I could go further and suggest we introduce a number of different ratings categories to decide the issue like:

Melody/Catchiness
Muscial skill
Originality
composition and arrangement
Political/
poetry/artistic
emotion value
Excitement

But it's all subjective and I'll be a sad tw@t so I won't bother !

Having briefly thought about it, I'm wondering if Handrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is a possible contender.

But once again, I'm not rushing to my LP collection to listen to it too much...

In the good old days when I used to frequent the Lifeboat pub on Cleethorpes sea front they had a fantastic jukebox in The Chart Room. One night some joker put Hank Mizell's "Jungle Rock" on continuous play. Whilst accepting your point about "Stairway to heaven" it could be worse...

War Pigs by Black Sabbath. Best live act I have ever seen

I also love Ain't Got No Money by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Superb guitar work as has Poles Apart by Pink Floyd

Chris Farlowe - Out of time.

Surprisingly, I have one "sloppy" song that I absolutely adore from a long dead great, Clifford T. Ward "Gaye" Simply beautiful.

No attempt at ethical or social seduction can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred of the Tory party. So far as I'm concerned they're lower than vermin. Aneurin Bevan.

Everlong by the Foo Fighters. Just amazing, and the acoustic version on the greatest hits CD is just as great.

The latest edition of Uncut has a great article about the making of David Bowie (Ziggy, Aladdin Sane etc.) His publicist was allegedly a Grimsby girl...

youll never walk alone   I know Liverpool adopted it but the lyrics are tremendous and serves as a reminder to us all that we have to keep battling on in life and the problems we encounter along the way

Love will tear us apart - joy division
Freak scene - Dinosaur Jr

I don't ususally go for covers, but June Tabor & Oysterband do a beautiful version of Love Will Tear Us Apart (not saying it is better, but it has a wonderfully stark quality to it - bit like when you really listen to Johnny Cash singing In My Life (a cover, i know)).

Favourite song ever is a bit of an ask isn't it? One of mine is Venus In Furs (Velvet Underground) but Invitation To The Blues/Kentucky Avenue/Bad Liver & A Broken Heart (all Tom Waits) would all push it pretty hard.

But then I have recently been taken by Gabriel (Lamb) and Resolve (Beth Gibbons) and Spiralling (Antony & The Johnsons) and Night After Night (Laura Marling) and many, many more.

Good to see Bowie get a mention earlier too. My first ever real gig (Serious Moonlight at Milton Keynes) and Wild Is The Wind would be in my top 50.

There's a crooked street in Grimsby Town
It's a well worn path I've travelled down
Now there's ruin in my name, I wish i'd never got off the train
And I wish I'd listened to the words you said....
...Don't go down to Freeman Street
Don't go down to Freeman Street
You'll be lost and never found
You can never turn around
Don't go down to Freeman Street

My favorite song :  it's lyrics too cool

Pain is my reward from psychotic tendencies
Pain I give to you
Pain relentlessly
Torturing has reached a level no one's ever seen
Suffer for your life
Rabid force extreme
Rage is my obsession driven by my cruelty
Rage is my release
Rage relentlessly
Ravaging continues through my scattered lunacy
Malice for your life
Rapid force extreme......................
