A debut single which in your opinion is either the best ever debut single of all time or the pinnacle of that particular artists releases...one hit wonders need not apply!!

Duran Duran - Planet Earth

Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short.

Neither band bettered their debut single IMO.

Will probably think of a few more later.

I was going to say "Are Friends Electric" by Tubeway Army/Gary Numan but they actually released 3 singles before which didn't chart.

Two other bands who I don't think better their debut singles were Epsom Mad Funkers (EMF) with Unbelievable and Neds Atomic Dustbin with Kill Your Television.

The Neds did release an EP before but KYT was their first actual single release.

IBIATCL, The Darkness?

They released 2 singles before that Biccys.

Get Your Hands Off My Woman peaked just outside the Top 40 and Growing On Me got to just outside the Top 10.

Ha ha, you might have known 'The Oracle' (les) would be hovering.
I mean that as a compliment by the way Les. Even better it was to correct Biccys

Righto, wasn't sure hence the "?" Growing on me. Loved that too. A song about genital warts.

"I can't get rid of you
I don't know what to do
I don't even know who is growing on who
'Cos everywhere I go you're there
Can't get you out of my hair
Can't pretend that I don't care - it's not fair

I'm being punished for all my offences
I wanna touch you but I'm afraid of the consequences
I wanna banish you from whence you came
But you're part of me now
And I've only got myself to blame

Sleeping in an empty bed
Can't get you off my head
I won't have a life until you're dead
Yes, you heard what I said

I wanna shake you off but you just won't go
And you're all over me but I don't want anyone to know
That you're attached to me, that's how you've grown
Won't you leave me, leave me alone"

Like or loathe the band, that's some clever lyrics! Almost a clever as their Xmas tune!

I still stand by the first Darkness album, it's absolute genius rock pomp.

I saw Blur do Popscene live before hearing the single and it just blew me away. Although a fantastic single it is far, far better live IMO, loads quicker, more attitude..... just ace so I was a bit disappointed with the studio version when I first heard it. I once read an interview with Graham Coxon and he said that he and the rest of Blur regret not recording it more like how they play it live. I still can't think of a better first single than She's So High though, as much as I'm racking my brains. My favourite Blur single? Probably 'For Tomorrow'.

You seem to be a man of good taste when it comes to music Les.

Would that've been around 1999/2000 1ML? I saw them at Hull Ice Arena on the same tour and that was full of birds. Blur at Cleethorpes Pier in '95 was without doubt the best gig I've ever been too. Underage by two years watching a band on top of their game on my own doorstep will never be beaten in my eyes. I hate U2 as well, biggest pile of overrated tosh IMO. The Edge's flat battery from his delay pedal is a better guitarist than him and don't even get me started on Bonio!!

Anyway, back to great first singles. Wannabe - Spice Girls??

Totally agree mate. I first saw Blur live at The Bizarre Festival in Germany in 1992 and they played Popscene live then around the time they released it as a single. Cracking weekend that was. I went mainly to see Carter USM, but as well as Blur other bands on the bill where EMF, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Slowdive, The Pogues and The Ramones.

I saw Blur the following year at Hull Uni too just before they released Park Life.

I hope Blur do more stuff be it live or on record. I went to see them last 2 years ago in what I thought would just be a bit of nostalgia but they definitely still have it, they were absolutely awesome.

You may well be in luck there mate. I caught the tail end of Alex James being interviewed on one of the London radio stations the other day. He said that they're writing/recording at the minute and hinted very strongly that they'll be touring when the new stuff comes out.

Great shout! Just thought of another one. Fall Out - The Police. Not a huge Police fan but I absolutely love that song. The B side, 'Nothing Achieving' I think it was called. That was a great song as well.

Before Andy Summers then, Henry Padovani played guitar on Fall Out. I've got the original 7" still somewhere. The B side was Nothing Achieving too.
