Went to Burnley last night for my first football match since Town’s dreadful 3-2 defeat at home to Crawley last season, with my City-supporting (but Town-liking) sons. (They both went to the playoff final 3 years ago in 2 of my old 90s Town shirts). At the game we were able to stand in licensed safe standing, which was very good. What I want to know is why Burnley, who have been either a Premier League team or a Championship team for many, many years now, are allowed to have safe standing but Town aren’t. I know the reasons/explanations given for why we can’t have it, but how are a club like Burnley allowed to ?

I seem to remember we had been told the the price of installation was very prohibitive.

I think we are allowed to though aren't we ?
It's just the old terraced like standing we couldn't convert back to .
I might be wrong but i think it's more expensive per safe standing space than a regular seat + actually takes up more room ; so if we replaced like for like as it is now it would reduce capacity and be costly . The only viable way of having it is in one of the corners i guess or if the main was extended as that wouldn't diminish the current low capacity further. People just stand up if they want to anyway though don't they really even in seating it's pretty much seating in name only especially behind goals . Wimbledon away was the most recent example i don't think i sat down and a lot of the ground looked stood up to me regularly and that's 'all seater' In name at least

Right, I understand better now. I was thinking it was still the stupid rule that because we’d once played in the “Championship “ division we could never have safe standing. I didn’t know we now have a choice and it’s basically down to finance etc. And yeah it would definitely cost more. At Burnley the safe standing was at the back of the away stand. The steps and standing room was bigger than the lower area plus you still had a seat and the metal barrier in front of you

Yes we are allowed to, but the old terrace steps in the Pontoon, Main and Osmond are too narrow. Only seats in the Upper and Lower could be converted. Upper A would be good but we only have 2k premium seats so won't happen. Agree - it's if and when we build on the open corners.

When the rule came out because at the time we was a Championship side we had to convert into a all seater stadium. However a new rule came out about safe standing, allowing us to convert to safe standing, its the cost of converting to safe standing that stops must clubs investing. . I can remember the days of standing in Pontoon, it was brilliant when you scored, I stood halfway up behind the goal, but would end up near to the bottom. Can also remember a few scary moments as well, especially if you fell over, happy days.

Still amazes me that there was no consideration to the size of the terrace so that the Lower was treated exactly the same as the Kop or Holte End

There was a fair amount of evidence that would back that opinion
