They shouldn’t, but they’re a big old ship to turn around. There’s only a 5 point gap between Carlisle and Tranmere in 22nd, which doesn’t sound like much, but when things are absolutely rotten to the core it takes some fixing no matter how much surgery is done on the squad.

Town’s class of 2021 is a great testament to that. It took Hurst simply too long to work out his best team (more of which was already in the building when he arrived than he realised) by which point we were already doomed.

Carlisle have now somehow got to pivot from playing Williamson’s take on “total football” (which was totally shít by all accounts) to something resembling what Artell eventually got us doing 12 months ago. All of this with a man whose only record in League Two is of grossly underachieving in the context of the budget of his disposal (and little-to-no room to bring in reinforcements of his own).

I’m careful of making too bold a prediction, in part because we play them in two days’ time and in part because Holloway, the odious little cúnt that he is, has undeniably done things at Swindon that few, not least myself, saw coming. But teams bottom of the basement division at this point in the season rarely if ever recover to safety, and I really don’t fancy Carlisle’s chances with Hughes at the wheel.

They've signed some decent players in the January window. Yes they got slaughtered on Saturday but itll take a few matches for them to gel together. Lets hope they don't gel just yet!

I'm not bitter and resentful but I've not quite forgiven them for 05/06 when Michael Bridges was miles offside at their place.  Cost us promotion and the title*.




*Nothing to do with the fact we didn't turn up on the day and bottled four of the next five games.

His motivation for the squad may be enough to get them out of the relegation spot, but he has failed to get his thinking working with lower league players. He is used to playing at Barca, Man U and Chelsea……..can he adapt to get his team playing in the lower reaches of league 2?

He should do OK if he has been unemployed and playing Football Manager since 2023.
