Grimsby have played 210 different teams in a competitive domestic match (League, FA cup, League Cup, FA Trophy, EFL Trophy & National league) during its history. Got me thinking is this the most that any club has played. Having played in all the divisions including 3rd North & 3rd South, National League and all the domestic trophies.

Have you counted in the teams we played in the Football Alliance from season 1889/90 to 1891/92? We played Sunderland Albion, Long Eaton Rangers and Birmingham St. George’s in those years who didn’t go on to play in the expanded Football League when we joined it for 1892/93 season. We also had one season in old Midlands League after failing re-election at the end of 1909/10.

Here’s the final league table for that season. A few different teams in there even after excluding reserve sides.

As others have indicated, it gets a bit messy, depending on what you call a "first class" game. It all became a bit "really?" when we dropped into non-league but still counted National League games the same as League games. Then we have other issues, such as the Wimbledon confusion. Both AFC Wimbledon and MK Dons claim to be the successors of Wimbledon FC, Newton Heath became Man United, etc etc. If we say one Wimbledon team is the successor to Wimbledon AFC, that clubs changing names are the same club, that teams such as Accrington Stanley are the same club as the Accrington Stanley that went out of business in the 1960s, (Nerwport County the same) then it ends up as a complete mess with lots of "If we count ....." I'd suggest that it is a few more than 210. But it's one of those stats that can be proved or disproved and argued over interminably.
