| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Don't know if anyone has posted this but Aribam Pepple signs on loan at Chesterfield. Says other clubs looking at him, it can't of been when he was here imo he was dross. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15VFKT8rhu/
He could easily have developed since he was here, players do. Look how Greenie has changed under DS and given a different role.

Looking at the highlights from being at Southend he looks to have come on a lot. Guaranteed to score on Saturday 😂

Friend of mine is a Southend season ticket holder. He says he was outstanding for them and way above conference level. Must have developed a bit!

He was 20 rather than 22, and fresh off the plane from Canada when he joined us. Since then he’s had two more years developing, getting used to playing over here and various loans/training with Luton.
Plus, he can’t have got any worse!

Yes players do develop over time, of course they do but how long realistically can a league 2 club afford to wait?
Chesterfield seem to have taken a more pragmatic decision to get a loan player who is firing in English football, albeit at a slightly lower level whilst we took him when he was as raw as a freshly dug carrot, and ditto with Obikwu and Barrington.
I think part of our strategy is to curry favour with clubs higher up the pyramid in the hope as time goes by we will be seen as a good bet for them to loan us players more first team ready. We have had too many loan players that have produced next to nothing so I wonder if this strategy will work or should we look for players that give us more impactful results?

When he was here I can't imagine PH investing much time or effort into his development programme.

He was awful for us but you could see he had all the attributes required to be a decent striker; big, powerful, pretty quick. Just didn't really know how to play football at the time. He's obviously been coached well in the meantime. Hope he does well, seemed like a really nice lad, just not against us!

It's one of the weaker podcasts for the EFL but the BBC's 72+ had a good interview with Richie Wellens last week where he talked about the 1st time loan deals. He was very open that a lot of them aren't ready for the rough and tumble of the mens game after a spell in the nice environment of the Elite Academy's, not everyone is Phil Foden or Cole Palmer in that they can just make that leap.
But Wellens' point was along the lines that if you have to take those 1st time loans to have a chance with the 2nd time loans. Now that might be the Justin Obikwu scenario of we take him at 18, give him a bit of game time and develop him and we then get first offer of a second loan when he's a year older. Or it might be the Bim Pepple where we take someone who's incredibly raw and in all honesty not yet ready. But from Luton's perspective it's better he has that experience elsewhere than stinking up the place for them. He benefits from it as it's a huge learning curve, Luton benefit as their player gets that crucial exposure in an environment that doesn't negatively impact on them and then we feel the benefit later, much later. As in two years later when Luton loan us Jayden Luker, who's already done his 1st time loan and is now ready to make the step-up to another level.
Andy Smith another example. We rolled the dice a little on a 1st time loan and then were lucky enough to get him for his 2nd time loan.
It's easy (and I'm certainly guilty of it) of criticising the loans of the Pepple's and Harry Woods of the world who you think are no better than our own kids. But a large part of it has to be about scratching the back of the bigger boys to put yourself in a position further down the line to get a little bit better from them.
No doubt about it, Pepple looked shite when he was here. But he also came into a side that lacked any real centre forward. McAtee was injured, Taylor's legs had gone and Orsi wasn't fancied. That left him and Kiki Simmonds trying to do stuff they shouldn't have been expected to do (not at that stage of their game).
