I’ve just seen that Tommy Widderington has had a stroke. I don’t think it’s been posted here on the Fishy and apologies if it has. The good news however is he is recovering at home and hopes to be back in the dugout at Aldershot Town as soon as is practicable.

Only 53, bless him. Was a good player, Tommy, possibly slightly underrated due to some of the other quality midfielders we had during that era. Was playing regularly in the Prem before we signed him from Southampton - £300k, was it?

Always comes across as a decent bloke, too. Wish him a speedy recovery.

I didn't rate him at the time, but I suppose he was signed as a 'replacement' for Groves so was on an absolute hiding to nothing from the start.

He's made a decent fist of management so hopefully he'll recover well and be able to resume his career.

Hope he's back at it again soon.
All the best Tommy

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.
