When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

It will be less than that in the Osmond I expect.

I’m sure we’d all rather be playing in a shiny new, state-of-the-art 15,000 seater stadium somewhere in the heart of Town, but BP is historic even if it’s not entirely fit for purpose 125 years after its first game.

You have to go back a long, long way to find photographs of the old girl where bits of it are no longer recognisable today. As in 1899, before any of the original Main Stand structure was built, as captured in the fantastic photos below. I find the history fascinating, personally.

In a world where most things in it seems to be going mad, we still have our common purpose bonding us together, our spiritual identity, which we can all relate to. Remember the outcry when they bulldozed the Winter Gardens.....what a crime that was. Remember how brilliant Victorian top town was... until the modernisers came in and disfigured it for life.

And now, in a world where lots are struggling to make ends meet, where life itself seems to have become very cheap and communitys are being left to rot, we have a bastion to hold up to the whole world; a landmark monument that has been given tremendous love and application to breathe new life into it. A place where we can go - as our fathers, (and lots now, mothers) and their fathers did before them and try to keep that sense of community, which is so precious, going; to bathe our children into real history and nostalgia and make them part of the Grimsby Town story.

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, please put your hands together and lets hear it for an innings of 125 years not out:    BLUNDELL PARK...HOME OF THE MIGHTY MARINERS.

'I walked in the dressing room. The window was open and I thought that a sea fret had got in. Then I saw smoke billowing from a pipe in the corner of the room...it was my centre-forward. He looked seven stone wet through. He went on to score thirty-odd goals that season.' Lawrie McMenemy on encountering the legend that was Matt Tees.

Hopefully, I should still be around to celebrate the 150th anniversary as well.

That is “hopefully” that I am still here and going to matches.

Not, “hopefully” that we are still playing at BP in another 25 years time.

One of the best stadiums in the football league if identikit meccano stadiums aren't your thing. She's not fit for purpose in many ways and probably puts a number of potential punters off, but we're lucky to have her, warts n all

Who still has the commemorative coin from 25 years ago?

I have 5 of them! How? I used to be in the team who cleaned the stadium and between us we found, i think, 28 that supporters had dropped.
