Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you try to read the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again

Hope not, as much as it was time to move on from here he still should hold a lot of respect for the good work he did here during both spells so wouldn't want to see him out of work.

Half the fans didn’t want him back after what he did to them last time.
So was on thin ice to start with.

What did he do to them last time? Keep them up against the odds and then very nearly taking them up even more against the odds?

Ultimately, he took a job at bigger club than any he had played for or managed at before, in a move that likely brought him a huge amount of financial security. I don’t think he can be criticised too harshly for that.

The chances of him recreating that success this time around was always unlikely, and again his recruitment looks a little unimaginative, but I don’t think him leaving for Ipswich in 2018 should have a huge bearing on his popularity now. He’ll live and die by his team’s performances and results now, which admittedly don’t look too promising.

Fickleness of football really isn't it?

Alan Buckley achieved back-to-back promotions here, taking us from one of our lowest ever positions as a club and on the brink of ruin to leave us, 7 years later, as a well established second-tier side in a position of relative financial security, a vibrant youth set-up and a reputation for outstandingly entertaining football.

He came back 3 times here with West Brom and each time was an absolute cauldron of hate for him.   The second occasion, the only Town win with Ivano netting the winner, was one of the loudest I've ever heard Blundell Park.  Just pure noise.

When he came back in the summer of 1997 some fans refused to go because he had returned.  The season started quite meekly and the knives were definitely out, if social media was around then I dread to think of the meltdown and the constant calling for his head.

Not saying it's right, but just how football goes.  Hurst, much like Buckley did in 1994, probably didn't help his reputation when he went to Ipswich by taking some of Shrewsbury's star players with him.

Most of the complaints on their forum are about the chairman and lack of funding
PH seems to be getting reasonable support from most of them

Hurst is one of those managers who, I believe, just run out of gas.

Some of the best managers reinvent themselves and change the way they coach and recruit. I get the impression Hurst is possibly sticking to some of the fundamentals that brought him — and Scott, to some degree — their early success.

When he joined us, he and Scott had a long list of targets and they knew the local non-league scene well. When you think about the backbone they immediately signed — McKeown, Pearson, Disley and then, later, Hearn. At their peaks, they'd have all done well in L2 at least.

We used to absolutely hammer teams, scoring sixes and sevens sometimes (Gateshead, Alfreton, Stockport, Halifax, etc.). I'm sure Hearn scored about three hat-tricks in his one ace season for us??

Somewhere along the line he became a little more pragmatic, we became less adventurous, and it paid off because, despite the Hearn factor, we finished 11th. We then made the play-offs four seasons running playing a little more conservatively.

But we didn't go defensive. I still thought we played on the front foot and recruited well — Bogle, Amond, etc.

But while all that's playing out, he's not keeping tabs on the up-and-coming talent. Instead he relies on Toto, Nolan, etc, to see him through. It nearly works, playing Henderson (who he signed at Town, but never played).

His style of management was never going to work at a club like Ipswich. Back to the drawing board and probably with a shallower knowledge of the talent pool at L2.

Can't take anything away from him for delivering promotion in 21/22. I don't think we had the best squad in the world, certainly not as good as 15/16, but he got us over the line through sheer spirit, and I guess that's one thing you can always have as a manager, if you're short in other areas (pun intended).

I dunno, I just felt his powers were waning a bit. He did not look like a man who would concede that his ways had been left behind. Football has changed in the past 4-5 years, he did enough to see us back into the League and have that excellent cup run, but I sensed a lack of investment in new younger, hungry players. His style became dry, predictable, and I think enough teams around us saw threw it and exploited our weaknesses.

He landed on his feet at Shrewsbury. I thought he'd keep them up then struggle, because he can't kick on. I feel, like Slade, he had his time, and football has moved on without him.

Whatever happens he won’t be short of job offers . Given his record of five consecutive NL playoff campaigns , two of which ended in promotion,  any ambitions club in the NL would think about appointing him.
