There’s also a few within that 20 years who went elsewhere before many even knew they existed, Lewis Collins to Reading and Reece York to Fulham. Matty Bird trialled with Man Utd.

There’s a number of reasons why youngsters can have their pathway blocked to first team, ability being one. Sometimes a player may have ability but find themselves in an unfortunate position they play may be well stocked with quality players and the budget may not stretch to carry a young pro who will never play.

I think especially in modern times the pressure to achieve is huge. All you have to do is read a thread on here when a players signs/leaves to see the high level critiques and concerns we apply. It’s a tough industry where the pressure to succeed is high and patience is not always afforded youngsters from either fans or staff.

I think in time, once the club gets into a mode of operation where we have a more healthy status on the pitch there will be more youngsters starting to come through. Crewe have a long history in producing young players going back to the 90s or even further back and that won’t happen to us overnight. With a turnover of managers who all have their ideas and need to prove themselves that culture of bringing young players simply because it’s what we do hasn’t been allowed to grow.

But tbf, none of those 3 ever achieved anything, so we hardly missed out

We sold Jack Barlow to Hull for a pretty significant fee as a kid.

How many youth players have not been given contracts at town and then gone on to become FL players? All the club can do is try to attract young talent and then train them to become professional footballers. However it's a two-way situation - the club has to provide the right coaching structure but also the players themselves have to be dedicated enough to use the training and advice offered to their best advantage. I would be more concerned about our Youth Training structure if we discarded players at 18 who were then snapped up by other league clubs and became successful footballers.

Hull bought potential in a time when they seemed flush and yes I’ll gladly take money of the mud rats anytime so for GTFC he could be considered a success I’d agree. Having said that this one sort of backs up my point of converting good youngsters to the man’s game
