I think there’s a bit more to the story than that, but Wrexham will have been one of relatively few candidates, I suspect. Crucially, any prospective club would have had to be fan owned - they wouldn’t have wanted loads of dead capital going to a private owner. As a starting point, that only gives you Wimbledon, Newport, Exeter and Wrexham, to the best of my knowledge.

Wimbledon already had a story of their own and Newport’s ground is owned by the Welsh RFU, leaving only Exeter and Wrexham. Exeter may have made sense given the airport nearby, but I suspect Wrexham were a) cheaper to buy and b) the better story - the once proud league club long since banished to non-league. It’s also more working class than Exeter; reinvigorating a deprived and forlorn community adds to the narrative.

I imagine they were always the standout if not only candidate.

I thought it was quite widely known that prior to them properly looking into it that they'd highlighted Hartlepool as their first choice/ideal story. Council owning the ground just meant it was a total non-starter. I'd imagine that perhaps then prompted them to narrow down their search and factor in the sort of criteria you've mentioned.

Coments please...

I am fairly certain that is inaccurate journalism and the bonus is £250k in total.

If they have a squad of 22, then that would be just over £11000 per player, probably less than a months wages for some of them.

It seems common they get this wrong or word it wrong at least. 250k to every player based on a squad of 22 would cost them 5.5 million! I know they have those Hollywood bucks but that would be a colossal waste of money lol.

It's probably not divided out exactly evenly. Those that were there the whole season or playing regularly are probably getting more of a cut than those on the fringes or who joined in January.

I’d assume most of the bigger signings will have promotion bonuses and pay escalators built into their contracts already so this is more of a discretionary additional bonus pot for the squad.

I actually thought that to give payments that aren't in the contract was against the rules, although I might be wrong.
Or possibly they just offered everybody a new contract that was identical to their previous one just with this extra bonus in, so everybody would sign it as its a free money no brainer.

Only Bale told him he does not want to play football anymore.
