Yes I know their history as they were a great team in the 60's when I was growing up. One of the questions is why have they always had a bigger fan base, when their population is smaller?
We are a lot more accessible to the big northern cities than Ipswich, aren't we? If you come from Leeds the journey to Ipswich is more daunting isn't it?
Perhaps I ought to temper my enthusiasm then and say could we become more like Ipswich Town? If not, who are we trying to emulate?
Hartlepools, darlington, Chesterfield or even Stockton

Just shows you how our location holds us back when you look at how well Burnley are doing, population 73,021 (2001 Census)

Good thread.
Can Grimsby ever be like Ipswich?. Don't see it personally but like others have said a new ground will go a long way to securing more league 2 stability.
I think what has let Grimsby down is the collapse of the fish market. What was once a thriving community has now gone down hill.
When speaking to outsiders who dont come from the area a lot seem to think Grimsby is a bit of a dump(some would be signings in football may think the same) . For me though there's good hardworking people in the area and Ive found they tend to be more friendlier in Lincolnshire than say London. Yes Grimsby has its share of problems but I try to look at the positives. Beautiful countryside and coast on your doorstep as well .

Ipswich have had 1 Football League promotion in the last 30-ish years and are tumbling down the divisions - are they the new GTFC?

When we were talking about a new training ground near Donny etc. to attract new players. somebody posted that attracting new players wasn't a problem when we were a championship club. Thanks to JF that's a world away at the moment.
So location is not a problem if you are successful. What we need from the new consortium is some form of commitment to propel the club forward. I can remember Bournemouth being in the realms of the lower leagues like we are now. They may now be in the championship but held their own for a few years in the prem, without building a new stadium. Likewise Darlington had a new stadium!
Hopefully the future can be rosy, new owners, new manager and a new beginning soon. 3 points on Saturday would give us impetus.

Ipswich are the only league team in Suffolk and fans travel from Newmarket Mildenhall Haverhill Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury to support them.
Travelling distance to London is just over an hour away.
So a bit different to Grimsby.

Ipswich really isn’t out on a limb. It’s a great southern location, easily commutable to from densely populated areas that are desirable places to live.
Attracting players to a place like Ipswich would be a million times easier than it is to get players to come and live on NE Lincolnshire, one of the most deprived areas in England. A sad indictment I grant you, yet factually correct.
