I was at BP when Wilkinson made his Town debut ( memory not what it was )
Cant remember who it was against but I think he scored with pretty much his first touch.

I was at Goodison that night. Still the most one-sided game I've ever seen where the team on top lost. 20 corners to nil I think and a similar amount of shots on target to 2. Steve Foley had a weak effort in the first half until Wilko's goal. Our defence, particularly Nigel Batch and Chris Nichol were unbeatable that night.
drunk it down all game but I don't think any of the 6000 Town fans cared.
I remember we stopped at Hartshead Moor services on the way home and the Town coach pulled in and got absolutely mobbed.
Everton were THE team of the moment then. Currently top of Division One, they'd won their last 10 games in all competitions, they were the FA Cup holders and went on to win the league title and the European Cup Winners Cup that season.

Did we have to wait 20 minutes after the game to let out, standing in water about 4 inches deep, my kickers were soaked. Did some of the coaches have their windows smashed in?
It was mad at Hartshead Moor services that night coming home.
This game remains in my memory as one of the best away games for me, for many reasons.
For you young ones the old 2nd division = Championship division, those were the days.

Yeah, there were a few coaches had their windows put through, I reckon there must have been about 80 coaches all parked along Stanley Park that night.

Always used to back in those days. There was no such thing as an "away kit" then. You had a "change strip" which you only wore when there was a colour clash.

I was one of the youths stood on the broad bar at the back of the lower terrace, you can see us all jump off going mental. Remember a police horse going far as we were penned in afterwards and the services were only bettered by Peterborough back in May

Got covered in vandal paint soaked wet through chased by a load of scallies outside the ground but afternoon off school to see the Mariners beat at the time the best team in Europe and the noise the Town fans made coming out the ground was unreal.

I think I may have been at that one. Wasn't there a big hoo hah about wether or not the ball was in. But their keeper reckoned it was the other side of the jumper. IIRC we were 47 -43 up when Jimbo's mam came out and marched him back home. It was his ball so that was effectively full time. 😄

| The wife was going away for a girly weekend. I jokingly remarked 'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football' 'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked She said 'Well you already know how to play football' |

Thats the one !! The controversy was because the jumper wasnt in a neatly rounded pile, a sleeve was trailing back and effectively widened the post and line....the ref neatly tucked it back in before restarting the game.

Was that the same game when there was a 15 minute argument as to whether the ball was "over" or not.

Another statistic from the game shows that we were the only cub to win at Goodison that season, and the only team to prevent Everton scoring at home that season. It also gave us an hat trick of sorts over them if you include the 2-1 win over them at BP in the League Cup when Micky Brolly scored twice, and the reserve game at BP when we beat them 2-0. Got Neville Southall's autograph on the teamsheet that night for my eldest lad.
