Our batting top order is definitely in need of a shake up. There just doesn't seem to be any confidence. Stokes can't always come in and save the day when we've lost 5 wickets already.
Add to that, if stokes had of been caught in the first test, which he should, that could have ended a whole lot differently.

Read lots of comments that 3,4 or even 5 players should be dropped after Lords!

That would be fine if we had a string of candidates waiting to step in to face, not a county championship attack, but currently probably the best side in the world.

A reshuffle may help but in my view only Ballance is cert to go. Who comes in Bairstow? Possibly but certainly not at 3. Does Bell move up or Root?

Would Hales be the best addition either at 1 or 3? Nick Compton?

Not an easy selection meeting

I'd be tempted to bring Compton in for Lyth for his grinding qualities. I just can't see Lyth making runs in the series. I could see some logic in attacking with Hales though. Bairstow is in unbelievable form but he has struggled with short, fast stuff in the past and he won't face anything like Johnson or Starc in the County Championship. Taylor is the only other one who'd tempt me, probably for Ballance and maybe push Bell to 3. I'd leave Root where he is at 5.

I saw somebody proclaiming Anderson past it yesterday and saying Finn should replace him. Only problem with the Ashes is suddenly people with no usual interest are suddenly experts!

Thing is though Chris, even though I agree that there is a big step up from County to Test Cricket,
you can only give the present incumbents so many chances, Lyse IMO isn't anywhere near good enough,
Ballances frailties to the short ball are so obvious that the Aussies only need to continue what they are
presently doing and Bells last dozen test scores with the exception of one fifty are absolutely appalling.
Root has to go in at 3 and surely there are some County players worth taking a chance on - i have always
thought we would get stuffed by the Aussies anyway and still reckon we will - IMO we may as well give some new blood a chance.

Root is the only one consistently making runs. The only really poor patch of his test career was when he was moved to open. Leave him where he is!

I agree what they did to Root by making him open  a couple of years ago was ridiculous, but he has improved as a Test Batsman now,  he has the technique to bat 3 now IMO and lets face it, he has been batting
3 in all but name from many tests now - its usually 23 for 3  after only  a few overs when he gets to bat!
I know what you mean about leaving things as they are, but something needs to be done, or we are looking
at another series hiding.

That's a very fair point! Think I would make one or two changes but still think I'd leave him where he is. Easy to forget we were stuffing them 9 days ago to go 1-0 up!

Bell certainly struggled at Lords and in the West Indies and in the 2 Tests v NZ but I can't help but looking back about 10 days when he was playing the most exquisite cover drives anyone in the world would struggle to beat.

The guy, when on form, is simply class.

Can he regain the form or has it gone forever? The trouble is how do you regain form against the best team in the world??
