By the time the ball has reached devitt, the other team would of reacted and possibly even got to the ball before devitt

Doubt it because the ball would have travelled say 25 yards until they react, only about 30 yards to go to reach devitt and the players would have to run about 40 yards and obviously a ball can travel quicker than a player

Yes.
Of course you can.
If it is from your own goalkeeper and if you are in the opposition half, the offside rule applies.

No you can't. You cannot be offside from a goal kick, you can from a kick out of the keeper's hands.

you can find an up-to-date copy of the rules on the FA website. and online as a .pdf somewhere.

this in my opinion is a slightly deluded idea..do you not think that if every player but one was on one side leaving say devitt on his own the other team might think there was something going on....and lets just say it worked..how many more times do ya think we would get away with it???? U.T.M

I think H&S prefer the tried and tested Cook standing near the touchline and  racing infield to head the ball to a team mate
if there is one there before the centre back can catch up with him to challenge, quite clever really because most balls fired down the middle are usually the centre backs

Down to skill levels of the players involved. Its hard for the keeper to pick out one player on the wing, hence why its easier to just boot it to a large group of players. Also if we lose the ball which generally happens as its easier for the defenders to head it, there is more players in a close knit group to win it back.

Finally you cannot be offside from a goal kick, hence why the strikers always stand 5 yards behind the defence when the kick is taken.

By the time the ball is kicked diagonally it will not reach the same distance in the opponents half as a straight kick. This would give players plenty of time to get to the unmarked winger.

THIS. Beat me to it.

A "goal kick" is one taken off the ground within the six yard box after the ball has gone out of play. You can't be offside from this kick until the ball has been played by another player.

The keeper kicking the ball out of his hands is not a goal kick and you can be directly offside from this.

Surely everyone knows these basics of the laws of the game?

I am sure Danny North and Adrian Forbes are a little bit confused about the offside law.

Well they was when they played for us.

Plus you can not be offside when you are taking a penalty,
