My 9 year old lad asked me last night who is the most popular person in the world? I didn't have a clue but after about an hour I came up with still living - Nelson Mandela, deceased - Princess Di.
I Would like people's opinions so I can pass them on to my lad.

well Obama is popular everywhere except America, or so it seems at the minute...sad as it seems, David Beckham is probably one of the most popular,although Michael Jordan is a bigger sports star

I think that in my lifetime it would have to be Diana as the day of her funeral and the week of mourning would suggest.

Currently, I would think that popular, iconic figures would be Obamarama, Mandela and maybe Richard Branson in the UK. Sportsmen who might be seen as popular? Steve Redgrave, Chris Hoy?

Reminds me of that episode of Father Ted were Ted and Dougal enter the Eurovision song contest and Dougal says "Imagine if we won, we'd be famous like Nelson Mandela and his mad wife."
