Empire of Light 10/10 Brilliant film made to the backdrop of the early 80s with Two Tone music acting as the antidote to the right wing skinhead racism. Olivia Colman is simply astonishing in the role of a cinema assistant manager beset by mental health problems. Filmed in Margate.
Empire of Light 9/10 From the melancholic piano music at the start to the poetry that saw out the end of the film I was hooked. It is understated but Unbelievably sad and strangely emotional at times and full of hope through adversity. The film brims with romance , sentiment, nostalgia and is an absolute delight. Olivia Colman is Brilliant (when is she not?) and Michael Ward is excellent too in a role far away from the one that he occupies In Topboy. I also like Toby Jones in it as well but there’s not a performance in it that’s bad. It won’t be for everyone but I loved it!

Boston Strangler 7.5/10
Based on the infamous Boston Strangler murders, this is the true story of Loretta McLaughlin, the first reporter to connect the murders and break the story of the Strangler. She and fellow reporter Jean Cole challenged the sexism of the early 1960s to report on the city's most notorious serial killer and worked tirelessly to keep women informed.
I don’t think this will be for everyone and it’s a movie I can imagine my Mum describing as ‘slow’ (they all are to her) but, I really enjoyed it. It’s not perfect by any shot but Carrie Coon and Kiera Knightley are good. I would say it’s in the same vein as Zodiac without reaching those heights but it’s very good nonetheless.

Luther: The Fallen Sun 5/10
Brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down a sadistic serial killer who is terrorising London.
Firstly I am a big fan of Idris Elba and absolutely love the tv series Luther but this film was a huge disappointment. For me it just didn’t translate in to a feature film and despite it being over 2 hours it felt rushed and lacked depth. What ‘storyline’ there was centred around violence porn and an extreme version of Hobson’s choice. I was looking forward to this film but it was a load of rubbish and I only hope the next one is much, much better.

Jellyfish 7/10
Low budget British film set in Margate about a schoolgirl from a dysfunctional family, who is trying to juggle going to school, with looking after her younger brother and sister, and also working part time in an amusement arcade, where she earns extra money with certain services for the male clients of the arcade; something that ends up backfiring on her.
She frequently gets into arguments and fights at school and has an acid tongue, so her drama teacher tries to encourage her to turn to stand up as an outlet for her rage.
Her mother is a total flake, which doesn't help her cause and it all comes to a head on a showcase night at a local theatre, which her teacher has been planning with the pupils for some time.
Made a change from he big budget Hollywood fare and I quite enjoyed it.

Just watched blue lights on i. Player in 6 parts.
It's set in modern day Belfast thought it was very good.
It follows 3 new recruits that are doing their 3 month probation period.
All different characters working along side an experience cop.

If you get the chance Pete check this guy out if you don't know about him already . Leroy Logan was a black police officer in the metropolitan police who joined to create positive change primarily among black communities after years of discrimination and anti police sentiment amongst sections of the black community. His Christian faith as time went on helped him as well. Became part of law enforcement despite his dad being beaten up by members of the metropolitan police over a small traffic incident and was initially dead against him joining the police . I read his autobiography Leroy Logan my life as a cop closing ranks and I know the BBC done a documentary series on him as well titled small axe . In my eyes a true hero 👏.

If your talking about the Steve McQueen passion project it’s not a documentary series. It is very good mind and does have your man in it. It’s a series of films set around London covering real and fictional characters and events over different periods of time. Well worth a watch!

Me and Ginny have both watched this too Pete and we enjoyed it. It’s in the TV thread though!
