Throughout the history of the old lady that is Blundell Park, who's the highest profile individual to have played/attended?

Ruud Gullit, who won the Ballon d'Or in 1987 and was named the World footballer of the Year in 1987 and 1989, must be up there. He played at BP for Chelsea in an FA Cup game in '95.

In 1976 Grimsby MP Anthony Crosland took Henry Kissinger, US Secretary of State, to watch Grimsby Town at home to Gillingham. We won 2-1.

Did Elton John ever attend as chairman of Watford?

Gullit stands out for me, he barely seemed to do anything yet seemingly did it all.

Gazza for me too, regardless of the stage of his career, he will forever be my favourite footballer…

How could I forget Gazza. I was at that game against Buuurnlah. Good shout

I think Gullit trumps Gazza mind.

On a serious note Edgar Davids had a pretty high-profile career, winning the Champions League, Serie A multiple times and playing in the semi-final of a World Cup.

A less obvious one is Raheem Sterling. Perhaps not as revered or iconic as Gullit, Davids or Gazza, but a pretty impressive footballing CV nonetheless.

Seem to remember Elton John on Parkinson's show I think, saying he took his mother to Blundell Park when Watford were playing us and the Town fans started singing
He's fat, his bent,
His arrsse is up for rent,
Elton john, Elton John!

He and Taupin still wrote a song called Grimsby though.

Not only did he attend the game when we played Watford in the FA Cup in the early 80’s, I sat next to him in the directors box and asked him to move his arm because his full length fur coat was annoying me.

I was a spotty faced young teenager at the time and I have to say you couldn’t wish to meet a nicer guy, had the pleasure of having a chat with him at half-time, very down-to-earth and he knew his football unlike most celebrity football supporters genuinely  a nice bloke

Are we any closer to getting promoted since Hurst has been here? No

Has he been given time to achieve promotion by the chairman and fans? Yes

Hurst out

The one time I've been in a box at BP was when we beat Oldham in the league cup in 97/98 when Lester scored a ten min hattrick. Alan Shearer was in the box next door for some reason. Word got out and my dad told me to go get his autograph but the jobsworth on the door wouldn't let me in, just took my programme into him. Always wondered if it was genuine but I looked his signature up online years later and it matched.

So if anyone ever hears of anyone willing to pay top dollar for a Grimsby v Oldham programme signed by Alan Shearer, please send them my way.

Just got to the end of writing all that and remembered he obviously also played there in 05/06 as well when Whittle smashed his face in.

Be interesting to see what Dean Henderson achieves internationally...

Gascoigne has to be up there for sure and so does Edgar Davids, irrespective of where they were at in their careers at the time.

Matthews comes to mind for me too. Widely regarded as the greatest player in the world in is heyday, he was the first winner in each case of the Footballer of the Year, European Footballer of the Year and Ballon d’Or awards. He is the only player to have been knighted while still playing, and had an FA Cup final named after him (“The Matthews Final”). I saw Stan play for Stoke at Blundell Park in his early 50s around 1963. Even Matthews must be eclipsed, however, by Henry Kissinger, a Nobel Peace Prize winner no less.

World Cup winner Ray Wilson played for Shrewsbury at B.P. in the League Cup run of 71/72.

With regards to Kissinger I would love to see some documentary evidence...there is absolutely nothing in the Telegraph archives which when you consider the importance of the guest is hard to understand. Neither is there any reference in the big daily newspapers of the time, who even then you'd have expected to have been all over it.
Kissinger is actually still alive. I wrote to his office to see if they could confirm or deny the story but never received a reply.
It could be one of the more attractive urban legends that have sprung up. I'd love it to be true but....

Alan Ball who in a game went flying into a challenge with Souness, gave as good as he got and Souness apparently got up and asked him "what have you ever won"? Bally's reply? "The big one son the big one"!

If Kissinger had of been there. Grimsby would have been at war shortly afterwards as any visit from Kissingeer precedes a war. Scum of the earth.  That said, we did have a cod war!

Have to be Nigel Kennedy (what do you mean who - the violinist) who I remember giving it large from the front of the upper. He certainly thought he was the highest profile spectator until a chorus of who the flipping hell is that saw him back to his seat. My memory may be playing tricks on me but i think it was the night Paul McGrath put on a defensive masterclass for Villa despite hardly being able to walk.

Yeah.  What did he expect?

I wondered if Nigel Kennedy was at the Villa game. One of the best atmosphere's I've ever experienced at BP. Up there with Spurs (Lineker et al) and Fulham in the Play Off semi final.

If Kissinger had of been there. Grimsby would have been at war shortly afterwards as any visit from Kissingeer precedes a war. Scum of the earth.  That said, we did have a cod war!

It wasn't Maradona that was doing keepy uppy, it was some Brazilian kid who was on that Coke ads that did the half-time entertainment.

The event is apparently referenced in Tony Crosland's biography, written by his wife, which I must admit I've not read, so can't send an image of the relevant text:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tony-Crosland-Susan/dp/022401787X

Here's proof Crosland met Kissinger in Lincs, albeit not the match

Did Jack Charlton play in a testimonial at Blundell Park in early 70’s?

Think he played for an All star eleven in Ron Cockerill’s testimonial which I remember attending but not who played. I also recall reading Tom Finley’s book and he told the story of how players loved playing in testimonial matches at Grimsby as they were always given a crate of fish.

Regards Barralad’s comment re Ray Wilson not sure about Shrewsbury but he definitely played for Oldham in the first game of the season, might have been 1970, think we won 4-1.

Remember Keegan also played for Newcastle in a forward three that also included Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley in a 1-1 draw.

A very good biography. What is without question is that Crosland met Kissinger at RAF Waddington. Crosland had an engagement which he wouldn't put off so that he and Kissinger could meet in London. That engagement was Town's match with Gillingham. The Civil Service (Foreign Office) were furious because it meant getting up at 4 a.m. to get to Lincoln.
According to Susan Crosland Kissinger was on his way to Africa (Rhodesia).

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

How could I forget Gazza. I was at that game against Buuurnlah. Good shout

I think Gullit trumps Gazza mind.

I was at that Burnley match. During the game the Pontoon started a “There’s only one Paul Gascoigne” chant at the same time as one of his team mates passed him the ball. Gazza had already stopped to applaud the Pontoon and the ball rolled past his feet. Legend.

My Dad once found himself sat next to Dave Sexton (ex Chelsea, Manchester United and England U21 manager) in the Findus apparently on a scouting mission. He told the story about the fish so my Dad, embarrassed by the club’s failure to recognise and welcome their distinguished guest, sent him a box of haddock which was very gratefully received. Oh, and by the way, I saw Jack Charlton play for Don Revie’s Leeds team at Blundell Park in the year they were promoted to Division 1.

The best keeper performances I’ve seen at BP are probably a David James for Watford, and Bruce Grobbelaar for Oldham. And Dave Beasant for us.

I remember reading about this in the paper - it said Shearer was there to see his mate, the referee!! Maybe an old school friend or something. I also think he might have been on crutches, can’t remember if that’s right though….

I remember Grobbelaar playing for Oldham as it was around the time he was accused of match fixing. He was good entertainment even though some in the Pontoon gave him stick and was still a great keeper at that stage in his career. Not long after my brother was in Skegness for a day out and Grobbelaar was there for some reason. He managed to speak to him and said he was a lovely guy.

My time following the Mariners it has to be Gullit, a football maestro.

Am sure there’s been plenty of ex internationals played. Don’t know the line up when we played Liverpool reserves in the 80s but there must’ve been some quality in there.

I was definitely there. I ran on the pitch at the end for his autograph and he told me to feck off. You

He had a blue jag which he had sprayed with claret coloured paint - I think I remember seeing it parked by Ron Ramsdens after the Villa match in 1994:

A very good biography. What is without question is that Crosland met Kissinger at RAF Waddington. Crosland had an engagement which he wouldn't put off so that he and Kissinger could meet in London. That engagement was Town's match with Gillingham. The Civil Service (Foreign Office) were furious because it meant getting up at 4 a.m. to get to Lincoln.
According to Susan Crosland Kissinger was on his way to Africa (Rhodesia).

A contemporary press account indicates that Kissinger attending BP is an urban myth:

Sunday Telegraph, 25/4/1976
Crosland, Kissinger Eat in the Mess

Even by the standards of modern jet-age diplomacy it was an extraordinary way of having breakfast.

Due to Mr. Anthony Crosland's "crucial constituency engagements in Grimsby" the new Foreign Secretary had bacon and eggs with more than 100 assorted diplomats, secret servicemen, international journalists and Dr. Henry Kissinger at an R.A.F. Officers Mess in the heart of rural Lincolnshire.

To attend this "working breakfast," Dr. Kissinger had to rise from his bed at Claridge's after about five hours sleep, drive to Heathrow and fly more than 100 miles up to RAF Waddington in his American Government 707.

Dragged along with him were Mrs. Anne Armstrong, the American Ambassador, a bevy of State Department diplomats. the American Press Corps and enough armed bodyguards to stop a small revolution. Within 2 1/2 hours. Dr. Kissinger and his entourage were airborne again, winging their way to Nairobi at the start of a gruelling two-week tour of seven African capitals aimed at averting a full scale war in Rhodesia.

And what were these " crucial " engagements ot Mr. Crosland? On Friday night he attended a committee meeting of Grimsby Constituency Labour party and presented some trophies at a leisure conference held at Cleethorpes by the Humberside County Council.

Then, yesterday, after waving Dr. Kissinger goodbye, he held a routine constituents' surgery and went on to watch Grimsby Town play Gillingham in a battle against relegation to the Fourth Division.

When I was a lad I sat behind Karen Brady in the upper findus when she came as CEO of Birmingham City, she was a great laff and we had a bit of banter throughout the game, tried for 90 mins to get a date but she was having none of it

Thanks for posting this. I've never seen it.
Two things spring to mind
1. The timing. No time for a meeting and the match
2. The security. Sure someone would have noticed such a large security presence but equally surely the chances of any security set up sanctioning a visit to an untested large venue where, in the main stand, the chance of Kissinger being assaulted by stray Werthers presented a huge security risk are next to none.

The aim of argument or discussion should not be victory but progress.

Joseph Joubert.

A young Ray Houghton, later of Liverpool and the Republic of Ireland fame, playing for Fulham and absolutely destroying us.

Who was that midfielder for Portsmouth who was on another level to everyone else. A Czech or Yugoslav or Croation or some such International player.

Was sat with Howard Wilkinson at a reserve game his son was playing in. Seen quite a few famous faces at reserve games, either scouting or watching family members play.

Danny Rose in the Osmond watching his brother play.

That away game he was unplayable. They had a great team if I remember rightly with a young Peter crouch up front.

The day was roasting on the seats in the open corner. Got sun burnt in the process

Didn't we lose 4-2 and we may have finished with 10? Mike Jeffrey scored too. You're right it was boiling. I think the other bloke up front for them was quite useful too, can't remember who it was though.

Am sure there’s been plenty of ex internationals played. Don’t know the line up when we played Liverpool reserves in the 80s but there must’ve been some quality in there.

I think that liverpool game was around 1988? Probably one of our highest attendances that season (4000?). they smashed us and I think maybe John Wark and Craig Johnstone played.

it wasn't a bad way to see us get dikked

great quote from Crouch - He'd smoke before the game, at half-time in the showers and after the game as well. Red Marlboros, too. The real heavy stuff." Crouch also mentioned: "I think I scored about 19 goals that season and he put pretty much every single one on a plate for me. He didn't speak much, but you knew he understood far more than he was letting on. You could speak to him one-on-one and he'd answer in perfect English, but as soon as you told him to track back, he'd reply: 'I don't understand.'
— Peter Crouch talks about Prosinečki

that pompey squad had some bloody decent players in it (including Jason Crowe!)

The other fella was Scottish, can’t remember his name. Mark Burchill or something like that? Had been at Celtic as a kid.

Danny Butterfield scored a decent goal for that day - it was scorching in the open end and Prosinecki ran the game from the centre circle. Absolute class

World Cup winner and MOTM in the 66 Final (imo) Alan Ball when he played for Southampton.

Wasn't it his dad that someone in the Main Stand belted him one as he went down the tunnel in an FA Cup game we drew or did he belt a fan? We then went to Preston in the replay where Alan Gauden scored the only goal of the game. I know we went mental when he scored.

Wasn't the next round against Coventry or is my mind playing  tricks.

Anyone go to this match? England v Australia U17s in August 2010. A young Raheem Sterling scores (from 1:12).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvRmTxgZ5yY

A load of the other squad members have made decent careers - Jordan Pickford, Jake Forster-Caskey, Nathaniel Chalobah, etc.

Funnily enough, starting in defence that day was one Luke Hendrie.

Shearer and Lineker have been rightly mentioned.

Gary Lineker also won the Golden Boot at a World Cup.  Alan Shearer is also the leading scorer in the (short) history of the PL.

If there was an award for which famous person would have a permanent reminder from their visit to BP, then Shearer is the clear winner. For “that” scar.  😅

I have no proof but did hear years ago that although Kissinger was in Grimsby, he did not go to a Town match.

Despite his advancing years, I was in awe watching Edgar Davids play at Blundell Park. Can’t think we’ve had too many other Champions Leagues winners play on our hallowed turf!

Despite his age, think he was late 30’s, he oozed class and ran the game from a deep role! Class is permanent as they say and that was definitely evident!

I remember that game well for a few reasons. Firstly, my son had been born just a few days earlier and I’d barely slept a wink since - I think I literally fell asleep just before half-time.

Then Liam Hearn came off the bench, scored and then promptly did his cruciate right in front of me. Horrible thing to witness.

And also for this goal; short of Muzzy Izzet’s overhead kick I can’t think of a better goal I’ve ever seen at BP…
