At the risk of sounding like Tim Mickleburgh, and I'm sure this has been asked on here in the past.

We have Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes, and Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby.

Does anyone know why it's called Cleethorpe Road and not Cleethorpes Road?

Apparently the original road would have been going to the thorpe of Clee, before the seaside resort of Cleethorpes was founded, which is where you get Cleethorpe Road from.

Maybe that's why the 's' is added so often? Some people must be subconsciously trying to make up for the existence of Cleethorpe Road.

Wonder if Cleethorpes is unique in being a town with the plural of ‘thorpe’.
