No way is Sky worth the £600 a year when you can watch every game live on the Internet for free, watch every movie for free and use a PVR on your PC to record proogrammes...

I cancelled Sky a year ago and have never missed it.

That's confirmed my post then. Get it.

(Thought I should add, I don't have it! My folks do and it's fab. I have a PS3 and use it as my PVR, hardly watch football on tv and I download some movies and stream them to it! Sky+ IS simpler to use than a sheet of loo roll!!)

Me too, streaming footy on the Net has moved on and picture / reliability is much better than it was a short time ago.

I do pay for newsgroup access (£7 a month). Newsgroups are excellent for DVD quality films and can be downloaded in 4 minutes flat with my 20mb connection (not that I condone such an activity!). I'd advise anyone with a plasma / LCD TV to acquire a splitter (if needed) for your graphics card and run a cable to your TV. Very easy and very cheap to do.

That said, everyone I know who has Sky Plus swears by it. V+ is decent but not in the same league as Sky Plus.

What ISP are you with Vicar? Newsgroups used to be free. Not used them much recently, due to the advent of torrents!

Virgin, but I use the Usenet newsgroup as it is so comprehensive and you get to use 100% of your bandwidth unlike torrents. I download at 2.5 mb/s at all times via the newsgroup.

Binary newsgroups were generally provided for no additional charge by your ISP, but this practice ended 5 years ago or so. Some ISPs still provide text newsgroups, but none that I am aware of provide unrestricted access to binary newsgroups anymore.

The best way to set things up to be able to download full DVDs, music and games from binary newsgroups is to do the following:

1. Pay for an account at http://www.newzbin.com; this the best newsgroup search engine there is.
2. Pay for a copy of http://www.newsleecher.com - don't risk a dodgy download of this as most come equipped with a trojan payload
3. Get an account at one of the top 2 binary newsgroup providers; Easynews or Giganews.

Once you get it all set up, all you need to do is to go to newzbin.com, find the film you want, click it and it all downloads, verifies and repairs, and un-rars and it available for you to watch/play/stream.

...the irony is that the legal movie industry is yet to come up with such a user-friendly approach as this...

just checked and I can still download binary newsgroups using newsgrabber. On virgin. The one bugbear I always had was yot never knew where to find stuff and yot had to constantly update the groups yot were subscribed to. I like the sound of what you've said there though Macca, thanks.

If all the cars in England were placed end to end on a long road, some sharp object in a Type-R would still try to pass them

Just bookmark this page http://atdhe.net/

Then come back whenever there is any sort of sporting even going on anywhere in the world and you'll be able to watch it.

Get a couple of cables so you can link your PC up to your TV so you can watch it on the big screen.

No one needs Sky anymore for sport or films, which I would are their two biggest sell points.

Depends on what sort of video and audio outputs you have from your PC/Laptop/Mac and what inputs go into your telly.

Go and have a look and post back here.
