Tough people who are going to have to make tough decisions. Alot of the squad needs replacing this summer. I certainly wouldn't want to be Artell

Listened to the Stockwood interview twice now, particularly the bit about getting recruitment wrong and playing style
Is he talking about player recruitment or managerial recruitment, is Artell due the chop?

Player. He compliments Artell in other parts, so I don't think he's having a go at him.

Both the pre-match interview with Stockwood and the post-match interview with Artell are a good listen. I like what they both had to say in the main, but I think that the Stockwood interview presents a couple of questions:
1) The January recruitment was successful on the face of it, and hopefully it can be scaled up to be a success over a summer transfer window that is likely to see 12+ players through the door. But, if it's an unsuccessful window, who is accountable?
2) This 'game model' that the owners have which Hurst kept saying was coming but never did, when is Artell expected to have this fully implemented?

Reading between the lines on the Jason interview us former manager doesn’t come out of that too well.
Across both interviews there was something that’s quite rare in professional football & that’s to a small degree magnanimity.
Not sure I’m comfortable with the owners identifying playing style but I guess as they leaned in it’s their call.

I’m sure the owners will have learned a hell of a lot this season.

The playing budget will be less than this season due to lower season ticket renewals.

I think they will get benefit of the doubt from most and we will probably do 5k+ again. I imagine another season like this one and the goodwill towards AP & JS will not be so high We really need to hope lessons have been learnt

I think most will renew their season tickets now we know we will be playing in the EFL. We have had better crowds this year than last, and we will hopefully have a much changed and improved squad, and it seems obvious that unlike last season we will go into this one with the owners, management team coaches and recruitment specialist all on the same wavelength.
It might work or not, but I think there is more chance of any system working if all the staff are genuinely behind it.
I think the mood music coming put of BP will be very positive this summer as well, on the theme of a new start and let's all pull together so without being naive I think most fans will respond to that particularly if the signings match the rhetoric.

I agree, I looked around yesterday and actually reflected the amazing numbers we’re getting at BP (and as ever away) considering our position, results at home and poor standards of football. The owners have done a decent job with engagement & getting bums on seats, clearly supporters want to come to BP, hopefully their loyalty will be rewarded next season but I think some will need to manage their expectations as stability will no doubt be the first & arguably the realistic objective.

It was mentioned very briefly yesterday but I’d be surprised if J&A aren’t actively prioritising capital investment from new sources; hopefully before next season, and with a material benefit to the playing budget. They’re clever. They know they’ll never compete with the likes of Wrexham and Stockport financially but it’s fairly self evident that you have to spend to get quality as a general rule. They’ll know what a competitive budget looks like in this league. They wouldn’t have a ‘game model’ without a ‘financial model’ to sync it to. Bottom line this season - what they’ve spent hasn’t really washed its face and their ‘game model’ needs a re-boot.

Well someone fecked up brining with in players the manager did not want. My guess is along with several others he was paid off after signing an NDA. So much for free speech.

I think we’re beginning to understand the manager brought in several players he wanted with I suspect little statistical data to justify that they’d fit into the way the club wanted to play. If you get paid off you generally sign a compromise agreement which includes some sort of NDA which is fair considering you’re getting a settlement.

JS didn’t say The Grimsby Way but he still believes the club should have a footballing identity. I still believe the manager should bring the identity with them not the other way around

But our recent history shows that model doesn't work....if you have a preferred style then recruiting players to that helps with continuity and then development and integration of our own youth. Swapping managers as often as we do you end up with a complete revolving door of players and staff with zero affiliation.

He did use the term in one interview, might have even been the fans forum but I might be wrong about that.

Very much backwards thinking nowadays, all the top clubs recruit managers to suit the style they want and it helps with player identification. It also helps in turnovers of staff/players as there's no need to be recruiting new staff/players to fit a different identity if a manager leaves.

After listening to both Jason's Saturday interview and Artells post match comments over the last few weeks I feel a little more confident in our future after a wretched season. A few months ago I couldnt listen to him. Mind you a few months ago I thought Thompson flattered to deceive as well so what do I know. By all accounts Artell is a decent guy and as Jason states the best leaders have a mixture of humility, technical ability and listening skills. He has a difficult week ahead of him so was pleased it was done and dusted on Saturday. Think the summer recruitment will be interesting and looking forward to see what sort of team we are aiming for. UTM

A great statement from DA
PH always clapped the fans and commented on the good numbers away from home but it felt it was just part of his standard repertoire. With DA I think he was genuinely surprised at the level of backing from the fans, especially away from home. We had 3 long distance trips inside 2 weeks in March averaging over 500 fans making great noise and over 5.5k midweek home to Mk with a great atmosphere, not long after the Donny shambles - I think that really touched him

Hurst gave an interview when he was actually Scunny manager, were he went out of his way to praise the Grimsby fans, esp the away support - cant get less standard repertoire than that. Nothing in it for him at all, in all probability got his own clubs fans backs up. His appreciation of our away following in particular was clearly genuine. I also remember Doig giving an interview shortly after joining the shrews first time around. The club interviewer said something along the lines of "one thing different for you now is the size of the away support your getting with our fans in league1", said really smugly obviously assuming Doig would lap it up and blow smoke up their bottom. Doig just cut him dead and said "no Grimsbys a big club and got a big away following, so that's no different at all". I dare say we would have been taking more than them in the conference tbh. You could just tell the interviewer had that grin wiped off his face and he swiftly moved on. But fair play, most assistants would have just followed the party line in that situation and agreed how great the shrewsbury fans were.

Fair enough - never heard about that comment from when PH was at Scunny, that would have gone down well! DA has been gushing with praise - he certainly shows more emotion than PH so just a difference in their characters then.
