I might get pelters for this but are we really waxing lyrical over that pass. We have really been starved of quality if that 40 yard pass, with a big margin for error, is being drooled over.

I think it is more the fact that it was put into the perfect position. There was a massive space but he did put it exactly where he wanted to which is better than virtually everything else we see. I get your point though, that shouldn't be a standout moment and it says something that it is.

If it was De Bruyne making that pass to Haaland, Gary Lineker  and the rest of the Match of the Day hangeroners would have the tissues out and trousers round there ankles.

The pass didn't go too far, it wasn't too short, it was the right length for Smith to get to without checking his run and was hit hard enough that it didn't give the defence a chance of getting across. Basically, the sort of pass we've seen about once or twice from a Town player this season where, let's face it, the general standard of play has been flipping awful.

With respect to them, neither Gav, Harry, Andrews or Green even see that pass never mind weight it to perfection.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

The pass to Smith stands out mainly because it allowed thr chaser to carry on at full speed.

How many laboured passes have been sent in games this season?

We don't "flow", the passing has been so.slow, as if no one knows who wants the ball, or where they are going to receive it !

Other teams seem to have set ups where a pass always goes at reasonable speed to a player with no Town player closing in.

Having a bad run of injuries is still no excuse for replacements not doing the basics - ball control, positioning awareness, trapping a ball without 2 or 3 bounces, knowing where the next receiver is going to be, and then making yourself free again to receive.

One crucial loss has been a suitable no 10 player, with a workrate from.the likes of McAtee or Lloyd.

Hopefully all in the management thoughts.as they look to recruit?

Ainley looks to be worth keeping with that level of vision and accuracy.

Who know, maybe Thompson and Ainley could be a solid midfield pairing, or am I reading too much into one pass?
